Over 100 000 attend pro-Palestine march in #London despite significant restrictions and 77 arrests.

Over 1 000 #BritishJews including Shoah survivors, prominent legal figures, etc signed an open letter criticising pigs' behaviour towards protesters, which were rightfully described as an unjustified attack on #politicalfreedoms.

PSC and other organising groups condemned pigs' 🐷 🐷 actions. #FUCKtheMet #ACAB

#FreePalestineNOW 🇵🇸

FYI: Several protesters were arrested before the march began!

The founder of #StopTheWarCoalition was arrested.

As the march DISPERSED, protesters were detained. Does that sound like a democracy? Don't think so!

This rerouting of the march is not an abuse of freedom of expression and freedom of assembly.

As Sinn Fein said in their 1996 submission to the review on parades in Northern Ireland

>> The right to march is a democratic right. It is fundamental to the civil and human rights of all citizens.

The right to march involves freedom of assembly and freedom of political expression.

The right to march is not absolute, it is a right which carries responsibilities; it is a right which must not be misused.

In any society, especially a divided society, the right to march must be exercised with due regard for the rights of others. <<

The right of the PSC to march is an important right that must be upheld, even though those marches' expression of hatred for Israel and its people is repugnant and militates against a political settlement that respects the legitimate rights of both the Israeli and Palestinian peoples.

Nevertheless, the exercise of this right must be balanced against the right of Jews to practice their religion free from intimidation and disruption.

Rerouting the march achieves this balance.

✡️ Today's Jew of the Day is Rosalind Franklin!

Rosalind Elsie Franklin was a chemist and X-ray crystallographer whose pioneering work paved the way for many huge scientific advances, specifically around DNA, of which she is considered by many to be an unsung hero, outlining the composition and basic structure of the DNA structure before Watson and Crick.

Franklin's early work was on using X-ray and displacement to determine the porousness of coal, which was of critical importance during WW2, as it determine coal's applicability as both a fuel source and as a possible filter in gas masks, etc.

After the war, she went on to work on biology, where she studied the structure of RNA viruses.
Her she made multiple discoveries, including that of protein molecules arranged in a helix. She even presented her findings at a lecture where Watson attended, but he did not recognize her findings.
