So I'm enjoying a #cider at a local watering hole late at night and the #CAF match is on in the bar here between #Mauritania and #Tanzania. They're late in the second half and there's no score...they really should not be broadcasting this in the United States because it really is a classic reinforcement of American prejudices concerning the worst aspects of #TheBeautifulGame. These teams act as if they are allergic to the attacking third of the pitch.

Wait -- Tanzania has broken through just as I write this because of course that happens. 1-0. #football #AfricanFootball

like the cosmic crisp isn't a great apple, this isn't a great cider. but also kind of like and yet moreso than the cosmic crisp, I think it's a cider that has an actual role. One _other than_ surviving shipping well.

it's supposed to be hot this week. if not this week, we're heading into august.

i bought a bottle. we'll see.

so after saying more or less all the above to the seattle cider rep and also saying that making a cider from it seemed fairly unlikely, i gave it a try.

it's the pilsner of the apple cider world. but it's a _pretty decent_ pilsner.

I don't mean that it tastes like a pilsner; it doesn't. I don't like beer. But I know some of the _roles_ of beer.

this cider is light, but in defiance of my expectations, it's not _empty_. it has a presence. it's the sort of cider you'd actively enjoy in the shade during a very hot day, probably after you've been doing something athletic.

seattle cider dropped a cosmic-crisp single variety cider, so i had a sample this weekend

my expectations were low because the cosmic crisp is what I think of as an adequate apple, but no better. it functions as an apple, it fulfills the role of apple, the texture is reliable and the flavour is acceptable. but there are many better - fuji and honeycrisp both come immediately to mind as similar but better cultivars not as durable in shipping.

(this isn't to condemn the cosmic crisp; the last apple to occupy its slot was the loathsome red delicious, a mealy, tasteless apple-shaped object which fulfilled the function of _looking_ like an apple, but not that of _being_ an apple. cosmic crisp is far superior.)

"Tonight I will be mostly..."

Made by Biddenden Cider locally and blended with just the right amount of honey and herbs. The folks at Biddenden don't really 'do' mild cider so the 7.5% rating is quite normal for them...

"It's just a lovely fruit drink made from apples and honey my dear, you finish it up and have another glass!" 😁😉

Photos of male catkins, and cones of Common Alder, Alnus glutinosa and the male catkins of Hazel Corylus avellana, commonly called lamb’s tails, close to Beau Vista Orchard. Both introduced into NZ from Europe. Catkins are an inflorescence, or cluster of flowers usually unisexual for wind distribution. They often flower in Winter or Spring before the leaves open. #trees #nature #cider #orchard #trees #Hazel #Alder

I recently received two of the latest ciders from #SchillingCider, fruit-forward products from the company’s Legends of #Cider line: Grapefruit and Chill, a seasonal specialty, and Strawbeary Rhube Awakening, newly added to the year-round lineup.
