What could possibly go wrong? #DOGE to rapidly rebuild #SocialSecurity #codebase.
Under any circumstances, a migration of this size and scale would be a massive undertaking, experts tell WIRED, but the expedited deadline runs the risk of obstructing payments to the more than 65 million people in the US currently receiving Social Security benefits.

Move fast and break democracy!
What could possibly go wrong? DOGE to rapidly rebuild Social Security codebase.
What a bunch of morons...
#DOGE Plans to Rebuild SSA #Codebase in Months, #Risking Benefits and System #Collapse
"Social Security systems contain tens of millions of lines of code written in #COBOL, an archaic programming language. Safely rewriting that code would take years—DOGE wants it done in months.
Musk pointed to data he allegedly pulled from the system that showed 150-year-olds in the US were receiving benefits, something that isn’t actually happening..."

life lessons from my #codebase
Another thing to do with codebases: explore the non code files which tell fascinating stories about the projects, their authors, and maintainers.
Some examples of what can be found buried in source trees: READMEs, FAQs, design documents, screenshots, manifestos, rants, research papers and technical reports, archives of mailing list discussions, acknowledgments and credits, guides for contributors, and more.

My work involves writing, maintaining, and expanding a web application. It's the only web application we develop, we are not an agency. What I always have been wondering, is our codebase size typical or beyond the norm? I'm not referring to the number of visitors the site receives, but rather the number of lines of code that makes up the application.
What's the most extensive Django codebase you've ever tackled?

Besides the sheer size of the #codebase, Windows' fanatical #dedication to backwards #compatibility means there's a lot of really old code still in use. I suspect code written 20+ years ago is fairly likely to contain security problems that would never get written today.

Thank you yet again to all the staff at #CodeClan who went above and beyond the call of duty teaching and supporting students especially after the liquidation and transfer to #CodeBase

@colincogle @joepie91 it's literally the same #OpenSource #Codebase just without #Microsoft's #proprietary #BinaryBlobs & #telemetry aka. #Spyware...
Even uses the same #AddOns...
In fact, I preinstall it as GUI Editor basically everywhere...
You are not impressing me when you say during a job interview that you use VI as your editor of choice for writing code. If anything it's a not notch in the do-not-hire column.
I'm all for knowing how to use VI but there are better options for writing code in a large code base.
We have put together a self-assessment tool to help you discover the readiness of your codebase. Access it here https://publiccodenet.github.io/assessment-eligibility
Are you wondering about codebase stewardship's importance in governments using Open Source?
Here are 4 quick reasons:
1. long-term thinking
2. maintenance
3. sustainability
4. security
Do you steward a codebase, please add more reasons why we should prioritize codebase stewardship
We were curious to see how Chat-GPT, a non-open source software, could benefit us in codebase stewardship. So, we decided to put it to the test.
Here's what happened.
You can read all about it on our blog https://blog.publiccode.net/news/2023/01/12/using-chat-gpt-in-codebase-stewardship.html.
It's been YEARS since I last worked in someone else's #codebase (I'm typically a solo #developer), and it is so much fun. It's like #archeology, trying to get into the mind of someone you don't know to understand how and why they did things.
