SUNDAY SERVICE

¾ oz lemon juice
¾ oz ginger liqueur
½ oz Aperol
1½ oz Tequila blanco

Garnish: cucumber slice
Method: Combine all ingredients in a shaker with crushed ice and shake. Open pour, top with more crushed ice, and garnish by dabbing the cucumber slice(s) in black pepper before placing on the edge of the glass.

Very nice afternoon sipper. I found this one quite savory on its own. Normally I’d pop some saline into any tequila drink, but it doesn’t seem to need it.

This year's greatest success 🥰 and greatest failure 😭 .

I love the Japanese stripy cucumbers: their pretty scalloped edges, distinctive flavor, and crispness when turned into pickles. I've been trying to grow them since pre-COVID, and always got tons of flowers (usually male) and very little fruit. This year I finally nailed the right combination of high-potassium fertilizer and hand pollination, and had more cucumbers than in the past 5 years combined. And the best tsukemono I've ever made!

Alas, since the departure of our red-shouldered hawks the squirrel population has exploded, and they got these two young ones and the four female flowers that remained, killing the plant in the process.

Trying to come up with a positive way to think of this mess some critter (probably squirrel) has made of my cucumbers. If they ate them, rather than chewing half of one up and leaving the remains on my lawn furniture or took more than one bite, I could see it as sharing. Or maybe it’s an education - I don’t understand this behaviour, so I can learn?

OK, here we go: this cucumber is as ready as it's going to get. I love how the sliced cucumbers look like little flower petals. 🙂 Everything gets salted, squeezed, combined, and then thoroughly squeezed again. Three kinds of sesame seed are added at the very end.

The garden carrots never germinated, so this is is a store bought carrot. The cucumbers, daikon, and hakurei turnips are all from my garden; that's never been possible before this summer. 2/3
