Replied to The Europeans

@europeanspodcast The fact that we had European elections last year and not a single party, not even the supposedly paneuropean Volt, campaigned on making Europe Day a bank holiday in all willing EU statelets (not you, Luxembourg, you're the only one that doesn't act like a parochial village on this, good for you!) is just mindblowing to me. It's great that parties and concerts happen, but we should be celebrating #EuropeDay together, all over the EU, as a bank holiday.

We're going to be at two exciting events in Amsterdam on May 9 to celebrate Europe Day! We have two pairs of tickets to give away to this late-night event at Paradiso. One pair has been claimed already -- message us if you're Amsterdam-based and would like to get your hands on the second pair!

@mastomememakers 1 out of 27 EU countries celebrates #EuropeDay as a bank holiday (good for you, Luxembourg).

I agree about "things" when they're valuable, ie legislative power, the EU as a global actor, EU Commission investment programmes that get touted then cut drastically by the Council, etc. Manfred Weber as the President of the CE through a pandemic and the Ukraine war is not one of those things. Fuck him and fuck the EPP. (Merci, mon Empereur! Cucking the EPP with vdL was a clutch move.)

Jack Lynch quoted Tom Kettle in his speech on Ireland's accession to the EEC:

My only counsel to Ireland is, that in order to become deeply Irish, she must first become European. (1910)

If this generation has for its first task the recovery of the old Ireland, it has for its second, the discovery of the new Europe. (1910)

#EuropeDay

Both quotes are from Thomas M. Kettle, ‘Apology’ (1910), in The day’s burden: studies, literary & political and miscellaneous essays (Dublin, 1937).
