Devo, “Satisfaction” from Are We Not Men, 1978
“When I’m riding ‘round the world and I’m doing this and I’m signing that And I’m trying to make some girl who tells me babybabybabybabybabybabybabybaby… better come back later next week ‘cause you see I’m on a losing streak”
(Try as I might I can't get an accurate count of the babies.)
#TheRollingStones' adolescent hunger provides the perfect set piece for #Devo's retelling in a slightly devolved near-future. The signature cutting #GuitarRiff transforms into the mechanized chugging of pistons, the cry of stifled lust becomes a foregone conclusion of failure at a mere a mechanical function. Seizing upon the throw-away colloquial “baby,” turning it into an infantalizing warble in a Brave New World, Devo subversively get us to revel in their #dystopian vision.
(Sorry for the FB link - this is the only place I found this full iconic SNL performance.)
