The first unveiling of the Irish Tricolour by Thomas Francis Meagher at 33 the Mall in Waterford city took place on 7th March 1848. Meagher was an Irish nationalist and leader of the Young Irelanders in the Rebellion of 1848. It was not until the Easter Rising of 1916, when it was raised above Dublin's General Post Office by Gearóid O'Sullivan, that the tricolour came to be regarded as the national flag.
