“Ultimately, the sound you get out of any instrument is yourself. The instrument is only a small percentage of it all. The rest is how you touch it, what your left hand does, what your right hand does, what you hear in your head, and the heart and soul that you put into your performance. Those things allow you to find your sound on any instrument you pick up.” - Dave Holland

Check out the second half of our conversation with the legendary Dave Holland. The bassist will be performing with his New Quartet - with Kris Davis, Jaleel Shaw, and Nasheet Waits- at SMOKE Jazz Club from September 4th to September 8th.

PG: Since musical relationships are very important to you, it would be interesting to know more about your solo bass work on both Emerald Tears

I was confused by this record when I bought it recently, largely by the mismatch between Wheeler's serene brass band sensibilities and avant garde-ist Evan Parker blowing the living shit out of his horn in full turbo, circular breathing mayhem mode. Having listened to it every day for ten days, I've concluded it's one of the most musically adventurous and brilliant records I've ever heard.

Just discovered the Rainer Bruninghaus album Freigeweht. What joy, one of my favourite drummers Jon Christensen and Kenny Wheeler is in peak form and extraordinary (he was an improv God). Dreamy free-flowing music, but with a subtle edge as it slices through the conscious mind. Perfect accompaniment to Monkey Pick tea. #improvisedmusic #jazz #tea #kennywheeler #jonchristensen open.spotify.com/track/35DC8wj

Remarkable study of #KennyWheeler with #LeeKonitz in the background. After Kenny’s #AngelSong, featuring Konitz (first time they played together well into their 70s!!), that group toured initially sticking to Angel Song material tho’ LK would do an unaccompanied standard like #BodyAndSoul. But later they co-formed a quintet in all but name, incorporating Lee’s compositions (mostly very canny reworkings of #standards: eg, Thingin’ = #AllTheThingsYouAre in A-flat but modulating to DMaj.) #Jazz
