Standing in the edge of a small irregularly shaped field/pasture. Snow underfoot and ahead 20-30cm / a foot or less deep with occasional bits of grass, weed, saplings poking through and random sets of animal tracks going here and there. To the left open mixed woods with mostly poplar in front, mostly showing their own shadow, a bit of light from the sun off to the right lighting one side. the forest floor is striped with their blue snowy shadows. Farther ahead across another arm of the field, is another strip of mixed woods, mostly spruce in near silhouette. The sun hangs like a great golden white blob to the right just above these trees with light artifacts from the camera lens scattering over the trees below like faint small round rainbows and casts long shadows over the snowy field.. The sky away from the sun is blue. The image has a dull gold frame like folded ribbon and the text Blessed Solstice in an almost script font, a brighter version of the frame colour appears in bottom left.

A preview of the improvised masks I made for #WinterSolstice Tomorrow is a work day, so I plan to drag the Jul log today- these masks are for that- though prob just for a photo op as they aren't super functional..lol- just paper + measurements weren't what they might have been, but lessons learned! #Ragana #Baltic #Goddess of #nature #balance #death and #regeneration is strongest at the time of Winter Solstice; we celebrate her #darkness + #Saule #Sun we #celebrate the beginning of her return

Two flat paper cut out masks, coloured with oil pastel and coloured pencils. On the left is a sun disk with curved rays and a bit of blue-gold sky between them (I didn't design it well and needed a bit more coverage than just the rays would give!) It's cut out a bit poorly- again because I was trying to keep some coverage.. The other is a sort of human bird hybrid- dark colours ranging from blue and green to violet and black, meant to suggest the irridescence of a raven. Feathers go around from the sides to top and top centre are 4 green birch leaves. The forehead has a red band and the face comes down to a beaky point. The details are meant to suggest Ragana Goddess of witches and wild places able to appear as birds and animals- I suggest a tie to ancient Bird Goddess- the red band from anicent figurines- and give a nod to her connection to birch trees.

#ArtAdventCalendar Day 19 didn't spend too much time outside yesterday (bit of shovelling, restocking wood etc) but just as I was going out in the afternoon, noticed the sun coming through the trees. Almost #WinterSolstice I walked down the road allowance beside the acreage + just a little way out on the farm following that light #Saule #Sun was playing peek-a-boo through the clouds Her power is at its lowest of the year, but her beauty is great #WinterBright #pagan #Latvian #animist #Alberta

From an open snowy area with numerous small poplar suckers sticking through the snow we look across a wire and post fence and towards a sparse line of irregularly spaced youngish poplars in near silhouette, with many suckers of varying heights among them. A bit farther and another fence then another wider open snowy area, then a dense area of low willows. The sky beyond is sunset gold and orange though about a half hour before actual sunset. The sun is not quite halfway up the view, visible as an area of brighter glow trough thin cloud and half of its disk visible below a narrow band of darker cloud. A slight intensifying filter has given a bit of violet cast and a white vignette has been applied around the edges.

A couple of pots with foliage have also been placed on the ground beside the bench.

Winter Solstice is associated with #Ragana (Latvian sp) in #Baltic tradition - Indo-European gods + Christianity have reduced this nature deity to a hag #witch (often in a negative way, not the modern reclaimed use of the word!) of wild places and dubious ways- I'll be exploring ideas restoring her primal attributes, and will be thinking of her essence as a symbol of natural forces/cycles this Solstice day! eg- She may represent natural darkness, and essential balance to the light of #Saule /Sun
