2/2 — Justin Green references Ellington quitting a partnership with Ewell Conaway in Washington D.C., while Ellington's Wikipedia has an uncited "Working as a freelance sign painter from 1917".

Both of these add sign painting details related to the entertainment business, which makes me suspect there is some other source out there.

Can the hivemind of the Fediverse work some magic?

'Inside Letterform Archive' is @stewf's regular BLAG column and I'm pinching myself that I will finally get to be inside @letterformarchive myself this weekend.

This is ahead of Monday's session with Michelle "Meng" Nguyen and Damon @nbsigns Styer.

'A Sign Painterly Slice Through Letterform Archive' is free, with a recording posted online afterwards.

I wasn't expecting this to go live so soon but here's a little project I'm collaborating on with Jay Smith. The aim is to reprint the Coast Manual of Lettering and Designs (1907).

The manual is one of the rarest sign painting books out there, and it was a series of lucky events that led to Jay having a copy in his possession: bl.ag/bookish-good-luck-at-mcl.

I'll share more with mailing list subscribers soon, but please back it and boost 😊

I believe that Vienna's Schildermalermuseum is the only one in the world that's solely dedicated to sign painting, but I'd love to be proved wrong!

I was lucky to visit in 2016 (bl.ag/viennas-incredible-schil) and then to collaborate with Tom Koch on a short film about the museum's founder, Josef Samuel: bl.ag/meet-josef-samuel-vienna.

Having a fun day on press with BLAG 07, the Letterheads special: bl.ag/07.

It never ceases to feel like magic when those digital files turn into the real thing on paper. This time there's 60% more if it than usual, and I am loving every fresh sheet that emerges.

There's still a way to go until it's all folded, stitched, trimmed, and bound, but the early signs are that this will be my favourite yet.

"BLAG hit the ground running as the industry publication that matters. It’s deeply rooted in the tradition with its finger on the pulse of evolution."

"An absurdly cool niche publication on an important form of communication/art."

"National geographic for the world of signpainting and handlettering."

"It’s the most inspiring creative magazine in the galaxy — and probably a few other galaxies too!"

@nihilistnomya Thank you for supporting your local sign painter.

The 'dying art' narrative is maybe a couple of steps removed from the truth these days, as the last decade or two have seen a real ressurgence in those commissioning and practising the craft.

Many point to the Sign Painters film as a pivotal moment in this ressurgence, and you can read my reflections on its role here, which includes a link to watch it free online: bl.ag/reflections-on-the-impac

New at bl.ag online, news of a fundraiser to support the next film in the 'When Better Letters Met' series: bl.ag/introducing-a-new-better.

Here's the direct link to the Kickstarter, which is now 50% funded, so thank you to our early backers!
