#JukeboxFridayNight #ThatFirstTime

The first concert I ever went to: Debbie Gibson

I was pretty young, and went with my mom (I was such a big fan!). Throughout the concert, Debbie was drinking water from red plastic Solo cups. After the concert ended and people were leaving, my mom made her way to the stage where staff were cleaning up and asked for one of the used cups. She got one and gave it to me, and I kept it for YEARS.

When I first heard this song it was a short time right after hurricane María devastated our Island. I wasn't living there at the time but all my family, my people were. It took almost 2 weeks to get information on my family and the conditions around them. They were the longest 2 weeks of my life.

Tonight’s #JukeboxFridayNight theme is #ThatFirstTime.

The first time I heard “One” by #Metallica, I was about 12. It was a late night TV commercial for a heavy metal hit’s compilation. The snippet of the chorus scared me. I thought they were evil.

Later on, I realized it’s a tribute to “Johnny Got His Gun”, an incredibly powerful and poignant #AntiWar movie. To this day, the music video brings tears to my eyes.

Warning: Incredibly sad and psychologically disturbing

Another #JukeboxFridayNight #ThatFirstTime is from attending the first ever PAX East. At the time I hadn't yet heard of any of the musical acts that played at the concert, but I was utterly delighted by all of them and have been a fan since. It introduced me to a whole world of nerdy music I hadn't known existed. There were lots of groups that played but I'll shout out @mc_frontalot because he definitely left the biggest impression on me.

There are so many songs to choose from (please check them out!) but this is one of my favourites:

Today's #JukeBoxFridayNight theme is #ThatFirstTime. My pal @mdmrn went with a K-pop song that had an impact on him, so I think I'll do the same!

I was a HUGE S.E.S. fan. Do y'all know them? They were early 2000s-era K-pop and had a couple of amazing albums. Great from beginning to end.

"Dreams Come True" was SO emblematic of the era and I couldn't get enough of it: The English version, at least. Here's the Korean-language music video w/cringy animated alien rapping + bad sfx: youtube.com/watch?v=8uiR4SrDGZ.

about that first time Jenny heard Rock'n'Roll

"Jenny said when she was just five years old
You know there's nothing happening at all
Every time she puts on the radio
There was nothing goin' down at all
Then one fine mornin' she puts on a New York station
She couldn't believe what she heard at all
She started dancin' to that fine fine music
You know her life was saved by Rock 'n' Roll"

I can still remember the first time I got to hear tracks from David Bowie's then upcoming album, Low. Radio 1 played 5 tracks in succession (inc 2 tracks from side 2) . Later John Peel played the entire album. *On each occasion the opening track really set the tone of what was to come.*
*A great opening track.*

It took me a minute to come up with the best choice for #JukeboxFridayNight #ThatFirstTime

I've gone with Burn by The Cure. It's the opening track from The Crow, part of one of the best film albums ever made; and it really stuck with me as the first film I'd seen that spoke to my musical tastes and taste in films when I was in my early teens and sparked an interest in the mediums of film soundtracks.

That first time I bought an Album

"Back when I was younger they were talking at me
Never listened to a word I said
Always yap yap yapping and complaining at me
Made me think I'd be better off dead
I don't want to talk about it
I don't want to hear no lip
Take your share don't shout about it
That's your lot remember you're a kid"

Got gazumped! #JukeboxFridayNight actually turned out to be #ThatFirstTime so my pick for the actual game is the first live concert that I ever went to in Wellington, NZ

Band: Sherbet
Song: Howzat
Album: Howzat
Released: 1976
Video: youtu.be/8EmSanSFXEM

Lyrics
“You told me I was the one
The only one who got your head undone
And for a while I believed the line that you spun
But I've been looking at you

Looking closely at the things you do
I didn't see you the way you wanted me to
How, how, howzat!
You messed about I caught you out

Howzat!”

According to this song one of the first things Paul Simon remembers is music

"First thing I remember, I was lying in my bed
Couldn't've been no more than one or two
And I remember there's a radio comin' from the room next door
And my mother laughed the way some ladies do
When it's late in the evening
And the music's seeping through"
