#ArkadyOstrovsky on #Putin’s #War Strategy: What Does #Victory Mean?

Arkady #Ostrovsky, #Russia and Eastern #Europe Editor at The #Economist, unpacks the true purpose behind Putin’s war in Ukraine. Despite immense human and economic losses, Putin is playing a long game—using negotiations as a tool to outlast Western support and achieve a so-called “#DefinitiveResolution.” His ambition? To neutralize #Ukraine, rewrite the post-1945 order, and restore Russia’s #superpower status.

In every city you see them. The young men with nowhere to go and nothing to do. They are not unique to London, or Paris or Rio; each country, unhappy in its own way, has its own means of production. They are the world's problem demographic, caught between childhood and adulthood, care and responsibility, education and application. Wherever there is poverty and inequality, young men are waiting, ready to explode. Wherever there are cracks, they will be falling through them.

Well at least the Economist is being very clear about who's side they are on, apparently the new government in the white house is removing all this unnecessary red tape that costs business so much money.
Glad I've never signed up to the rag, removed myself from their mailing list.

"Slums are much hotter than richer areas, which have more shade and open space. Temperatures in October in Dharavi, a Mumbai slum that squashes 1M people into 2.4 square km, are 5 degrees higher than in Matunga, a posher suburb next door.

The effect of humid heat on outdoor workers costs India the equivalent of 7% of GDP each year."

The Economist · How 1.4bn Indians are adapting to climate changeBy The Economist

"Once they reach primary school, children should be ready to run a “mini-shakai” or “mini-society”. Children on lunch duty don chef whites, roll out tables, lay out crockery and serve their peers. After school, children on cleaning duty pull child-sized brooms to gather paper and dirt. By cleaning, children learn not to make a mess in the first place. They also learn to be egalitarian: no, “Oh the caretaker will clean it up later.”"

"Between 2018 and 2022, Indian investment in Africa exceeded $26bn, bringing it to more than 5x the amount over the previous 5 years. India today is the 2nd biggest bilateral creditor to Africa after China. With a total trading volume of $83bn in 2024, it is now also Africa’s 3rd largest trading partner after China and the EU."

The Economist · Adani’s problems in Kenya undermine Narendra Modi’s ambitions for AfricaBy The Economist

"Although NASA is a space agency, it is also a well-engineered machine for distributing pork. When NASA was founded in 1958 it established centres across America, cannily recruiting a phalanx of congressional bodyguards who would be keen to preserve high-paying jobs in their constituencies."
