The next ten days are the culmination of a huge project at my day job, as WNYC switches to a new audio playout and automation system for the first time since 2008. I am part of the team of engineers that has been installing, testing and customizing the new system and training new users. I have been working on it for about a year and a half, and today we put the thing on the air for the first time. By the middle of next week we'll be using the new system 24/7. A big f'n deal!

Today in the office, Seun Kuti and Egypt 80 performing for a taping of WNYC's Soundcheck podcast.
It was another rough day in the radio business. My job is safe, but there are 21 colleagues of mine who can't say the same.

75 years ago yesterday, WNYC aired the Miles Davis Sextet performing live at the original Birdland in New York City. The band included J.J. Johnson, Stan Getz, Tad Dameron, Gene Ramey, and Art Blakey! Five songs from the set have survived - listen to it here: https://www.wnyc.org/story/miles-davis/

Some great jazz has been coming through WNYC in recent days.

Oh look, it's Ravi Coltrane playing live on the air at WNYC. Just another day at the office, ho hum.
The Avett Brothers played as a trio live on WNYC's All of It w/guest host Tiffany Hansen today. They talked about the new Broadway musical, "Swept Away," incorporating music from their album, "Mingonette." Here's a brief clip I captured from behind while mixing #theavettbrothers #wnyc #AllofItRadioProgram
I am so very glad I never donated to @NPR and now I will never donate to NPR. So much schadenfreude listening to #WNYC's fall pledge drive and their talking heads saying, "Oh no, we're not hitting our goals!"
"Good." was all that went through my mind. Play some Lake Woebegone slashfic about ketchup and wry, snarky """science"""" on #Radiolab.
Support public radio! Support WNYC! I've donated, in fact I'm a sustaining member and I've even given some extra on the side. #wnyc #publicradio #support #pledge
"It Happened Here 2024" A new radio play starring Edie Falco and John Turturro
"And exclusive sneak peek of a brand new radio play starring Edie Falco, John Turturro and Tony Shalhoub. Inspired by Sinclair Lewis’ dystopian novel, It Can’t Happen Here, Richard Dresser’s novel, and now 6-part radio play called It Happened Here 2024, offers a glimpse of what could happen after the 2024 election if fascism creeps into the USA.
The story centers around the Weeks family as they brace for the election. Paul and Ruth’s family work to defeat the so-called Great Leader. Paul’s brother Garret and his family are on the other side. Family get-togethers are tense. When the Great Leader, with a giant boost from the Supreme Court, shockingly wins the quote, “most important election ever,” the family is thrown into chaos."

It was another awful day in the radio business. My job is safe, but the talent and institutional knowledge that walked out the door today (and in some cases, was shoved out) is devastating.

We have another round of layoffs coming to New York Public Radio (WNYC, WQXR and Gothamist) next month.

This is wild. Rando crypto streamers as possible election influencers?
We are living in the upside down.

Hello from the top of the Empire State Building (79th floor to be exact) where I am participating in an overnight test of WNYC's disaster recovery systems. While our colleagues are downtown at the studios testing backup power generators, I'm up here running the station's programming from our little studio in the sky.
