"When Doves Cry" is a song by American musician #Prince, and the lead single from his sixth studio album #PurpleRain. According to the DVD commentary of the film Purple Rain (1984), Prince was asked by director #AlbertMagnoli to write a song to match the theme of a particular segment of the film that involved intermingled parental difficulties and a love affair. The next morning, Prince had composed two songs, one of which was #WhenDovesCry.

I had two visitors this morning … 

a pair of mourning doves, who sat on the air conditioner in the living room, making their characteristic ooo-WOOO call.

They seemed perfectly happy, watching me watching them.

But then Lola the kitty caught a look, and jumped up, standing on the window sill. The pair vanished, but I hope they’ll visit again.

Even though "When Doves Cry" is a signature Prince song with its distinctive sound (also, no bassline!), I really wish the B-side "17 Days" had been included on 'Purple Rain'. It is truly an entrancing hidden gem! My 12-inch copy on display is the standard version, as there is another version which also included "1999" and "D.M.S.R.". Anyway, happy 40th anniversary (as of writing this) to both songs! Enjoy! 🎶🎼
