#stumps

Dead #trees are not wasted timber dollars - they are sources of food for literally thousands of beings in a #forest #ecosystem, from tiny microscopic beings to insectivorous birds. Standing dead trees are known as snags, while a fallen dead trees are nurse logs. A cut or natural stump can serve the same #ecological function as a #NurseStump.

Nature wastes nothing. If there is a nutrient source to be had, there is a being to benefit from it. Nurse logs, standing snags & nurse stumps play hosts to all sorts of mosses, lichens, fungi, insects & arthropods, many hidden deep inside, as well as other living beings that prey on them.

Nurse #stumps are still deeply rooted; new plant, tree & fungi life grows out of their tops. Nurse stumps & dead stumps that have no new growth atop are like anchor systems for living trees growing in forests. You destabilize the ecosystem when you remove them from their natural #environment.

I was really depressed seeing countless #OldGrowth #tree #stumps all over North #VancouverIsland . Like an endless graveyard of ancient forests. Hurt my #nature loving heart a lot. These are 2 of too many OG stumps scattered all over #vanisle North. They're clearcutting more of the last OGs on North Island as I type. These are #CrimesAgainstHumanity & #ecocide crimes by #BCNDP #NewDeathParty & enablers.

Good #evening everyone 🌙

Deer Shield / Mushroom! (Pluteus cervinus)

The Deer Shield is a #wood-rotting fungus that occurs mainly on hardwood #stumps. This fungus can appear at any time from late #spring through to late #autumn.

Although its caps are usually fawn or light brown, like the coat of a young #deer (referred to as a 'fawn' regardless of its colour!), some authorities say that the common name comes not from the #brown colour of the #cap but from antler-like horn-shaped protrusions on apex of the gill-face #cystidia (known as pleurocystidia) that can be seen under a #microscope!
