The "Canada in a Changing Climate: Synthesis Report" has just been released! Co-authored by 650+ experts from across the country, the report dives into the heart of how climate change is affecting our "True North," what's at risk, and how we can respond.
On impacts, people often think that because we are a northern country, "warmer will be better." However, nothing could be further from the truth. Canada is warming twice as fast as the global average, and as a result:
1. Climate change is harming our health and putting our food and water at risk. The spread of infectious diseases and the impacts of extreme weather events, from flooding and hurricanes to heatwaves and wildfire smoke are putting us all at risk: but we're not affected equally. Indigenous Peoples, women, children, youth, older adults, low-income individuals, people experiencing homelessness, people living with pre-existing physical and mental health conditions, and outdoor workers and first responders - they're all on the front lines.
2. Climate change is also threatening local economies and jobs as well as global supply chains. This affects everything from natural resource sectors that form such an important part of our economy to agriculture.
3, Climate change is causing our already aging infrastructure - buildings, roads, wastewater management and more - to decline or even fail. Most of it was built for a planet and for conditions that no longer exist. For that reason, it's the top sector at risk to climate change impacts in Canada.
On solutions, it's clear that the business case for adaptation is strong. The report finds that better incentives and coordination can help close Canada's adaptation gap while providing many co-benefits. For example, nature-based approaches save money while providing many benefits for ecosystem and human health. Local-level adaptation can play a leading role in our climate change response, promoting equity and, when Indigenous-led, supporting reconciliation.
This report provides foundational climate insights and fresh perspectives to guide our decisions and actions today. Check it out! changingclimate.ca/synthesis #changingclimate
