We left some sunflower seeds out a week or so ago to see if the crows would eat them. It seems that they’ve gotten the hint!
a lot of birds away from usual spots but no dog walkers or kids around.
It’s a bird city
Cork City, where birds have become incredibly adept at turning human carelessness into dining opportunities.
Urban-adapted birds like the seagulls and crows photographed here have developed significantly different behaviours compared to their rural counterparts. City-dwelling seagulls often show reduced fear responses to humans and have learned to time their foraging around peak human activity periods, such as lunch hours when dropped food is most available.
Crows, meanwhile, have demonstrated remarkable problem-solving abilities in urban environments and can even learn to associate specific locations with regular food sources. Studies have shown that urban bird populations often have different dietary compositions, stress hormone levels, and even song patterns compared to rural birds, reflecting their adaptation to city life and the constant presence of human activity.

Good #Sunday morning, all. This is about the 4th or 5th cool morning here in #Asheville, and it can continue for the next 6 months for my tastes. Some of the maples are hinting at #Fall and I'm listening.
The #crows came by this morning but a squirrel has figured this out as well, and he makes them nervous. They will fly away, I go to chase the squirrel away, and that makes them more nervous.
Some mornings they don't come back. I am not a squirrel fan. Sigh.
Mr Crow: "Sorry, I'm busy preening my molting feathers, can't come down right now. Just leave the peanuts in your garden at the usual spot. I'll catch them later."
Mr Crow's wing feathers seem to have grown back for the most part, but not completely, and as you can see on the pic, they're kinda "bent." They almost always have been like that (well, not in the first two months I befriended him two years ago, that's the weird thing) but I'm afraid it could be linked to why they seem to break easily. We'll see this autumn (keeping fingers crossed, last year they broke again very soon after regrowing).
That's all for today. Almost...
While I don't want to humanize him, he didn't hesitate a second, and I want to believe that he was happy to see me.
Later in the afternoon, I noticed both #crows perched on the pole for a while, so I decided to get out of the house with peanuts and water, it was another very hot day. When I got in the park, I noticed a third crow on the other side of the park. What? Yes, you guessed it: Kiddo is not gone yet! S/he is still here! (see Alt Text for details)
Alright, the thread that you've all been waiting for since I returned from France is here. It's time for a #CrowUpdate. Thursday was my first day back home (I got here Wednesday night) and I didn't leave the house, I was just too tired. However, in the afternoon, I saw an adult crow on the pole near my house. So I stepped on the balcony for a few seconds (no more, it must be 50°C there in the middle of the afternoon these days, not kidding) and...

Hooded Crows (Corvus cornix)
I know we should not anthropomorphize crows but the way this lil dude keeps wiping their beak after drinking reminds me of how I have to do that little under the faucet finger thing whenever I'm cooking (IYKYK)
A few weeks ago, @jastrow and I wondered if French crows and Japanese crows would speak the same language (they're the same species: Corvus corone). The caws I heard today were of a different tone (Japanese crows sound more "hoarse"?) but followed the same patterns. So is it a similar language with different accents? I think some scientific research should be made about that.
Tip for young aspiring #AFL (especially #adelaide #crows) players: when frustrated with someone, instead of yelling out or calling them a "faggot", substitute "fuck muppet".
Pros:
- takes roughly the same amount of energy
- expresses your anger adequately
- lets them know you think less of them on the basis of their actions, abilities or attitude
- doesn't alienate fans or other players
- is just downright amusing
Cons:
- none that I'm aware of
@PhotographyElf I hear some use rubber bands to trade with Crows!
Plato’s Dream
the gulls and magpies went out of their way to avoid pic being taken today.
