Good morning.
20 June 2025
Do you remember when Marine Lieutenant Colonel John Glenn orbited the Earth aboard Friendship 7? That historic flight took place on February 20, 1962—I hadn’t even turned ten yet. At the time, I was a Cub Scout and a proud member of Pack 33 at Yokosuka Navy Base in Japan. I recently looked it up and was amazed to find that Pack 33 is still going strong. Sometime between 1962 and 1964, Glenn visited the base and spoke at a scout gathering; I believe it may have been the ceremony marking my advancement to the Boy Scouts. Years later, in a remarkable full-circle moment, Senator John Glenn returned to space aboard the space shuttle Discovery on October 29, 1998—at the age of 77.
"As I hurtled through space, one thought kept crossing my mind—every part of this rocket was supplied by the lowest bidder.” - John Glenn

We had a scientific evening with the Cubs:
- Seeing how a lava lamp works
- Watching what happens with eggs in water
- Making non-Newtonian liquid and getting quite messy at the same time!
It was a lot of fun and the boys enjoyed learning the different science behind each experiment.

A bit late to post this week’s Cubs Meeting. It was our first week devoted to the Global Issues badge.
The Cubs considered what’s recyclable and sorted where the items would go to be recycled (e.g. at home , collection point, compostable, etc). Then they looked at where in the world the belongings in their homes were made and arranged them by continent.
And unrelated games were played outside to finish the evening.
The boys had a smashing time tonight as they took on Akela’s Challenge!
Protect an egg from breaking when dropped from a height of approximately 8ft. (Probably nearer 7ft in reality!)
Out of 25 eggs, only 3 survived.
We do this a couple of times each year
The boys are given the same materials and they have to use their ingenuity to protect the egg.
It’s a lot of fun, and can be quite messy!
Looking forward to Cubs tonight.
It’s going to be Akela’s Challenge.
Kids are going to love it.
I’m sat, out of the heat, collating and summarising the last year at Cubs for our Group AGM (my second, and again as the only CSL/CTL attending, though this year I am the only one).
I was pleased with last year’s Section Report so will be using it as the basis of my composition for this year. Nobody turned up to our AGM apart from Group Leaders, board members & one of our District Commissioners last year, so we’re turning it into an Awards Evening this time.
I’m exhausted!! We had a fab time in the woods, with the Cubs building their bivouacs.
This year the quality was up a level, and whilst I wouldn’t be tempted to sleep in them, they made them big enough to all sit in as a Six and, more importantly, had a lot of fun in the fresh air.
Thankfully the weather was lovely too.
The evening was capped off with a couple of campfire songs
Tonight we are bivouac-ing!!
One of my favourite meetings. Cubs enjoy it and it’s our first outdoor meeting of the year.
Every week I send a WhatsApp message to parents, reminding them about the meeting that night.
Then I get a number of messages saying their Cub isn’t coming!
It’s so frustrating when we’ve spent the time planning and printing stuff out.
I get that there’s illness etc; and we usually know about school events in advance, but really?
Not much we can do about it; just wish we’d have more advance notice.
Tonight at Cubs was, I hope, Egg-cellent.
Our Young People:
- made Chocolate Nests
- designed an Easter Egg
- made an Easter Basket
- had an Egg Hunt around the Hut grounds (it was getting dark & they probably didn’t find them all)
I started the night by having an Investiture Ceremony for one of my new Leadership Team. The first I had performed for a Leader, so I modelled it on my own Investiture & got some of the Cubs to help.
The Team Tiger Adventure helps Tiger Cub Scouts learn teamwork and citizenship through fun games and a service project. Tigers discover the importance of rules and teamwork, realizing that everyone’s role is vital for success. By helping their community, they embody the Cub Scout motto: “Do Your Best.” #TeamTiger #CubScouts #CommunityService #Teamwork #Citizenship https://scoutermom.com/19282/team-tiger-adventure-cub-scout/
Tiger Sky Is the Limit Adventure offers Tiger Cub Scouts an exciting intro to astronomy! Tigers explore the night sky, learning to use telescopes, binoculars, or cameras. They discover stars, planets, and constellations while connecting with global cultures and history. This adventure mixes science, creativity, and cultural awareness, sparking curiosity about the universe and our place in it. A fun, engaging way to dive into STEM!

Tonight our #Cubs had a visitor from the local Disability Sports Charity & they ran through some related mini games before teaching our Pack about Boccia, a ball sport similar to bocce, bowls & pétanque and developed for play by people with physical disabilities.
I asked them about what being healthy meant. To end the night, in their Sixes, they drew around one of their number and then drew & labelled the body parts from the list they were given.
Last weekend was our Cubs “Indoor Holiday”. The theme was Space & the plan was to have 2 Nights Away. The Named Storm meant a decision was made to start on Saturday rather than Friday.
Though now the senior Cub Scout Leader, this was only my 2nd Cubs residential & 2nd time involved in the planning/organisation of a residential. This time the latter (for me) was mostly about activities, whereas last time I did most of the admin (Scouts Scotland doing the activities). 1/3

After 5+ years of being a den leader and cubmaster, I am happy to share the final crafted Arrow of Light awards the cubbies received as part of their bridging over. I am also happy to find a new home of the Pinewood Derby track. #scoutingamerica #cubscouts #bsa
