On 27 April 1937, 88 years ago today, Antonio Gramsci died because of imprisonment under fascism.

His ideas on how oppressive power systems function and how to organise against them are as pertinent as ever. This essay by Stuart Hall is a great way into Gramsci - versobooks.com/en-gb/blogs/new

NOTE : Les lecteurs du message ci-dessus auront peut-être pensé (et ils auront raison !) au concept d'hégémonie de Gramsci, qui est très à la mode ces dernières décennies, et que ce passage de L'Idéologie Allemande a évidemment inspiré. Sur ce thème, et une critique de l'usage qui en est fait "à toutes les sauces" (pour ne pas dire pire), on peut lire l'excellent article de Gianfranco Rebucini, Culture, hégémonie et subjectivités. « Traductions » de Gramsci dans les sciences sociales critiques anglophones, avec du James C. Scott, du Bourdieu et du Edward Said dedans 😅

Hello! Updating my intro for the new year. Things I like & post about:
- Finishing up my PhD on Gramsci, 'Folk' Culture & the Scottish Folk Revival
- Food, drink & cooking; plus I make a cocktail-themed pie every month
- Knitting; intentional product knitter
- Highland Perthshire & the Cairngorms; plus general Scottishness

- Folk music; I mostly play Scottish tunes on a baritone uke

1) A photo of me playing a baritone ukulele outside in the Scottish hills. My uke has a spruce top and rosewood neck, back and sides, and is supported with a white and yellow strap. I am wearing a leather jacket, jeans and boots. The hills are laid out going up a glen behind me, and are a mixture of grass and forestry. It is a sunny day with white clouds.
2) A photo of me facing away from the camera, wearing a handknit jumper and matching hat. The jumper is a lopi yoked jumper, with main colour white and a colourwork yoke, hem and cuffs with bold geometric shapes in yellow, pink and blue, all outlined in black. The hat has the same pattern around it, and a pompom on top made of all the yarns. It is a late-winter Scottish day and in the background are some low hills.
3) A close-up square photo of a pie, with two cocktails to its top left, on a white wooden background. La tendenza del neofascismo ad impossessarsi di sigle, bandiere e miti antifascisti è un classico consolidato nel tempo:

- Ordine Nuovo era il giornale di Gramsci prima di essere usurpato come sigla terrorista nera;
- il Fronte della Gioventù era l'organizzazione giovanile del PCI prima che negli anni di Almirante il nome venisse dato ai giovani del MSI;
- La Giovine Italia era una associazione mazziniana prima che il nome venisse riciclato per un'organizzazione neofascista...

Si potrebbe continuare a lungo.
Che Antonio Gramsci, detenuto e fatto morire in carcere da Mussolini, fondatore e segretario del PCI, martire dell'antifascismo più inflessibile, rigoroso e colto, venga spacciato per una bandiera di Fratelli d'Italia, fa ridere e piangere al tempo stesso.

Ich sehe das anders als #Gramsci.

leben wir in zwei sich fundamental unterscheidenden Zeiten gleichzeitig.

Es gibt keine Monster, es gibt nur monströse Aufgaben und schreckliche Entscheidungen.

So, What's the catch?

Es gibt auf Sicht der nächsten Jahrzehnte keine positive Zukunftsbeschreibung.

Jeder Weg in die Zukunft ist auf den nächsten Metern grausam und braucht gemeinsame Einsicht und Leidenskraft.

Wenn's einfach wäre, würd's jeder machen. Hier ist "machen" allerdings gemeint als "es schaffen, bis der schwere Teil des Weges durchgestanden ist".
