For #MeerMittwoch here's a view of #Portsmouth from the sea, showing the historic waterfront with the Round Tower and Hot Walls to the right then the Spinnaker Tower and HMS Warrior to the left beyond Spice Island. Taken from the paddle steamer Waverley in 2022.

A mostly overcast day although some blue peeks through the thinner sheets of cloud in the sky, but it feels fairly warm. We're on the sea and with a small bit of wake present to the bottom right on the calm, green-blue water's surface we can tell we're at the aft of boat heading away from the land we're looking back at. That land is low-lying with a shallow beach on the right backed up by medieval stone fortifications around ten metres high with a couple of slightly larger towers on them, the leftmost of which is very round. The shoreline then becomes a wall of boulders for flood and erosion protection from the sea and this continues left almost fully before disappearing back on itself behind the spit of land here. An eclectic range of townhouses line the shore there, some up to five storeys in height. In the distance to the left there is a tall tower in white with a sharp spire and glass-fronted viewing areas high up. It bulges out with a skeletal white framework that represents billowing sails. Leftmost of all in the distance we can see masts rising up from an old sailing ship that's docked.

#Portsmouth is famous for its #naval traditions and has a #RoyalNavy base there, which goes back several centuries. Some old naval #ships have been restored and are open to the public, such as #HMSWarrior here.

Today's photo with the most hits: HMS Warrior, Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.

HMS Warrior is a 40-gun steam-powered armoured frigate built for the Royal Navy in 1859–1861. Warrior and her sister ship HMS Black Prince were the first armour-plated, iron-hulled warships, and were built in response to France's launching in 1859 of the first ocean-going ironclad warship, the wooden-hulled Gloire.

Something local for #SchiffSamstag and this is HMS Warrior here in #Portsmouth. Everyone who lives in Portsmouth has taken a photo of HMS Warrior at least once and this is one of many I've snapped over the years, from about a decade ago at #dusk in the #harbour. HMS Warrior is a mid nineteenth century ironclad frigate and probably the third most famous historic ship in our city behind HMS Victory and the Mary Rose.

It's late evening, perhaps just after sunset. There's still some lightness in the sky but some low cloud on the horizon is blocking any residual view of the sun. The sky is a dull, dim blue, peppered with small white clouds that are darker where the last of the daylight is behind them. We're standing on the shoreline near a small harbour. The tide is out and the water is flat. Small boats are at anchor in the water, appearing as little more than silhouettes. Across the water is a low land mass with some small tower blocks on it. Closer to us, to the right of our view is an historic masted ship, facing a little towards us, but also in silhouette form for the most part. We can see the tall masts and cross spars, and the long prow pointing over our right shoulder. It feels quiet and peaceful.
