Lessons on How to Draw by Hokusai via Kottke [Shared]
In 1812, Japanese woodblock print artist Katsushika Hokusai, who would later become famous for his iconic Great Wave off Kanagawa prints, published a three-volume series called Quick Lessons in Simplified Drawing. All three volumes are available online: one, two, three. Even if you’re not in the market for drawing lessons, the pages are wonderful to flip through.

The Great Wave Off Kanagawa, by Hokusai
Reproducing this woodblock print with 3D printing gives me even more appreciation for the original work.

Katsushika Hokusai's "Chinese Official Pausing on a Bridge to View the Snow" beautifully illustrates the serene connection between humanity and nature. The delicate lines and soft colors evoke tranquility. How does this artwork inspire your view of winter?

I don't think I ever shared this.
The Whirlpools of Awa captivates with swirling currents mirroring the grace of flowers, beautifully juxtaposed with tranquil mountains. Hokusai’s artistry captures nature's beauty and dynamism. How does this piece resonate with your view of nature?

In the Japanese ghost story 'Yotsuya Kaidan,' Oiwa became an onryō (vengeful spirit) after her death and haunted her treacherous husband everywhere he went in various ways, perhaps the most striking of which was her disfigured face appearing in paper lanterns. #MythologyMonday

Whether it’s a performance in an abandoned factory or demons reenacting folktales in Sumida Park, avant-garde dance shows are part of a program celebrating both the artist and Sumida’s local culture. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/culture/2024/11/08/stage/hokusai-butoh-sumida/ #culture #stage #butoh #dance #festivals #hokusai
"Feminine Wave," Katsushika Hokusai, 1845.
OK, I don't know what's "feminine" about this, but this is a great dramatic work by that master of the Ukiyo-e style, Hokusai, who also gave us another famous wave, that one with Mt. Fuji in the background, that's reproduced everywhere.
This is my way of saying to all my women/femme followers....don't forget, you still have power. You are still leaders. Don't let today derail you. Fight harder. Be that wave that pounds the rocks into sand. I will fight with you.

A poem we could all use right about now: "Hokusai Says" by Roger Keyes. An excerpt:
He says don’t be afraid.
Don’t be afraid.
Look, feel, let life take you by the hand.
Let life live through you.
