One of our most beautiful insects. This is a (greater) Hornet Hoverfly (Volucella zonaria). It is completely harmless; all an act.
In flight it is a brilliant orange. It resembles clear toffee.
Found mostly in southern areas of England. It does janitor duties in hornet nests.

I came across this giant hoverfly yesterday on a walk. I've never seen one before and it's maybe an inch (2.5cm) big.
I have tried to find out which it is but to no avail. We're NW Scotland if that helps
