@Remittancegirl @pgiulan Since long before Trump even entered politics, or #Palantir existed, I've been convinced that #surveillance, not revenue generation, was the real reason for #IncomeTax on working-class individuals (as opposed to plutocrats and corporations). There are many other ways to generate revenue, such as #VAT and #LandValueTax, or just income taxation limited to corporations and very wealthy individuals. But those wouldn't enable the monitoring of everyone's economic life the way population-wide income taxation does.

I just learned that #Detroit mayor Duggan has chosen not to pursue reelection. I have been impressed by his many efforts to improve the safety and quality of life in the community. I am sorry he was never able to get state support for a #LandValueTax but I appreciated his work and agree it was worth the effort. I hope his successor can keep the positive trajectory. wxyz.com/news/detroit-mayor-mi

@ChrisMayLA6 @RichardJMurphy Unfortunately, what Murphy fails to recognize is the "reset" we need is #LandValueTax #LVT. The #Chartists understood this over 150 years ago, the #Georgists understood this over 100 years ago. Hell, even Winston Churchill understood this. But here we are, in 2024, rehashing the same old arguments, whilst the landed get richer and the landless get poorer.

I have never seen a man get so much right, and then fail to make the final leap, as Richard Murphy.

One of the weirdest arguments I see against #LandValueTax is that it's impossible to accurately assess the unimproved value of land, and that's just plainly false. There are well-established procedures for doing so, and most jurisdictions in the US already do so. What most jurisdictions do not do is enact a split-rate property tax system, so that buildings/improvements and land values can be taxed separately. Annual rental values would still be subject to market forces in a variety of ways. #LVT

The primary reason why I see resistance to the very idea of #LandValueTax from otherwise intelligent and well-meaning people who are evidently learned in #Economics is that they simply don't understand how and why #LVT works.

They cannot bring themselves to believe that such a simple answer could possibly be the solution so such complex problems, because they do not grasp that land values are literally the root of all economic activity, that they are fundamental and foundational. #Georgism

@brendan Not this Vermonter. This Vermonter wants #Vermont to move away from taxing building values and toward taxing land values. Land value taxation is the only legitimate form of taxation, but at least property tax as it is captures land values to some extent, which makes it the most fair and just form of taxation we currently have. #LandValueTax should be the only tax, the #SingleTax. Land values should be taxed at a rate of 100%. #HenryGeorge #ProgressAndPoverty #LVT #Georgism

It was very helpful and sort of joyful to meet with our counterparts in the County. It is hard for us to solve problems separately. I hope it is easier to solve problems together. I used my time to talk up #zoningreform , #landvaluetax , and #parkingreform and tying capital improvement planning to comprehensive planning and shouted out @alfredtwu ‘s wonderful #missingsmall graphic ocf.berkeley.edu/~atwu/alfred/

' The overwhelming case for a land tax has been known for centuries and made by many of the most prominent economists. Yet such a tax or its less satisfactory cousin, a property tax on the combined value of land and buildings, has played little role in the UK tax system or most others.

The main reason is the rich and powerful in any country almost always dominate land ownership and oppose any land tax. '

I strongly support switching from standard property taxes (where improving your property costs you more money over time) to a #LandValueTax that encourages density and less vacant lots. Where public investment does less to reward the insiders who know what land will be much more valuable tomorrow. But in most areas, it should be phased in slowly.
