We need more #OpenSource and #OpenContent in #k12 #education.

Not super easy when #Google #Chromebooks are (for some valid reasons) the main devices students use.

For example, students learning #HTML and #CSS do it on .org or .com websites that include advertisements, instead of simply editing and viewing files in the browser. Can't wait to see how they do PHP and database access.

FFS, set up a #Linux #LAMP server on a virtual network and let them go to town.

I've seen this in the #OpenContent world also, where some organization will add a non-free clause to a #CreativeCommons license. Also sometimes add onerous crediting requirements (like "you must include our name, copyright, and a link to our site on every single page").

Both seem like odd things to do - why not just make a similar license (call it "inspired by" the original if you want), take out the conflicting portions, add your non-free portion, ???, and profit!

I don't think that the typical overworked and totally underpaid educator is worried much about if the content they need comes from a person or a computer.

Unfortunately, in my #k12 experience, not many people are interested in or even aware of #OpenContent or even #CreativeCommons. Many educators, IME, aren't worried about copyright infringement because they think education makes it fair use. Easy wins, open or not doesn't factor in.

Of course, anecdotes are not evidence.

What sort of an impact will #GenAI such as #ChatGPT or #Google #Gemini have on #OpenContent / #CreativeCommons content? I'm thinking specifically about people reusing the content, possibly modifying for their needs.

Who needs Open Content when you can have AI generate, in minutes, content that aligns with your needs and is "good enough"?

My feeling is right now, GenAI content is not good enough, and Open Content is still a great starting point. In 2 years, though, ????
