Local Rag saved from scrap heap… local journalism to remain.
Many moons back, #Taupo had two local #newspapers, producing 3 weekly editions between. As the internet took over advertising more and more, that went down to two a week. The Taupo Times closed down six months ago, then owned by Stuff. And the remaining title, the former Taupo Weekender, now renamed the Taupo & #Turangi Herald, was due to be closed in December, by its current ownership NZME (publishers of Auckland’s #NZ Herald).
A last minute purchase by the editor has seen a reprieve, and may impact other local papers also facing the axe. However, the talented pool of locally based journalists have long since disbanded. It would be terrific if that could be reestablished, in the process…
