What an insightful and intelligent interview with Eru Kapa-Kingi of #ToitūTeTiriti.

On a personal level I would like the #NZPol Westminster system of govt to be redesigned to incorporate #tikanga and reflect the promise of #TeTiritiOWaitangi.

A perfect example of the British colonial system of government oppressing the rights of Māori is the shameful privileges committee seeking to punish Māori MPs for expressing tikanga in parliament over Treaty Principles Bill.

Another positive round of Treaty Principles Bill oral submissions this morning although champion of colonial supremacy Julian Bachelor’s submission with PowerPoint presentation was a frightening insight into the minds of those in denial of #TeTiritioWaitangi
Some relief hearing committee members scoffing as he posed some of his more outrageous claims, particularly him basing his arguments on an English draft of te tiriti rather than the actual Tiriti in te reo that was signed. #NZPol

So Lord Hannon of the Atlas Network claims the #NZPol #ToitūTeTiriti is a problem imported from America.

#Act party leader #DavidSeymour and author of the Treaty Principles Bill designed to remove the principles of #TeTiritioWaitangi that protect all #NewZealand citizens and environment from exploitation, (both tangata whenua and tangata tiriti) claims he has no association with the RW "conspiracy" group known as the #AtlasNetwork . 🤔

Here in Aotearoa it's #WaitangiDay, which is an official public holiday. It's dedicated to the governing arrangements created for these islands, as documented by Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and it's English translation, The Treaty of Waitangi.

It's an ongoing cause of political conflict here that the two documents, although broadly similar, say some very different things in the specific wording. This becomes quickly obvious to anyone who learns enough Te Reo Māori to read both.

It is critically important for all NZers to understand that, amongst other rights and resources, #TeTiritioWaitangi protects the right to water for all people of NZ. Privatisation of water is a key aim for the #AtlasNetwork funded #ACT Party and #NZPol govt. While the treaty principles remain intact this will not be legally possible. #ToitūTeTiriti #JohnathanPie #UKPol

@DarkMatterZine

I just looked up The Water Knife by Bacigalupi, indeed.
The thing is in NZ, under legislation no one owns water although Māori have a customary right to guardianship of water agreed to in the principles of NZ's founding document #TeTiritioWaitangi. Both of these protections are currently under attack by #AtlasNetwork politician David Seymour who is trying to introduce bills to remove these #NZPol protections in law.

📝 Aotearoa Treaty Principles Bill Submissions

Now, I generally try to keep "politics" out of the recaps because this is meant to be a positive space for the fans - but I do know that A LOT of our cast and crew are affected by this bill personally so I do want to throw this in there.

It looks like you don't actually have to be a resident of Aotearoa to submit your feelings on the bill.

Here is helpful linktree with things you can say and how to submit that I tracked down via a post Rachel House reposted: linktr.ee/nzhumanrights

I was talking to a friend today about sending in an official comment on the Treaty Violation Bill. She's Pākeha, but very pro-Māori. But did - very gingerly and with some encouragement - express concerns about people of only Pākeha heritage being treated as second-class citizens.

This is the crux of the whole debate.

In brief, Māori determination to uphold Te Tiriti is *precisely* what protects us from this! I explained why and how, and she got it pretty fast.

I have spent all day trying to figure out what it is about the TPB that I don’t get.

I think I’ve begun to sort through it. I thought I’d bring it up here so I could hear other people’s thoughts.

The TPB is claiming rights & responsibilities for everyone in this country. But Te Tiriti isn’t for that. We have a lot of laws (eg. The Bill of Rights) & more that cover that.

Hope everyone is working on their Treaty Principles Bill submission today. If you can do it, do it. It’s the clearest signal you can give to all parties in parliament that this isn’t acceptable & that it will never be acceptable.

Explain that you oppose the bill, & why.

The bill: parliament.nz/en/pb/sc/committ

& email it to TreatyPrinciples@parliament.govt.nz

Submissions close 7 January, & you’ll be busy over the holiday so get it in early.
