#EPA data make it hard to know the extent of the #contamination from last year’s #Ohio #derailment

By JOSH FUNK - Associated Press
September 24, 2024

"The way the Environmental Protection Agency has reported its test results since the disastrous East Palestine, Ohio, train derailment last year makes it hard for residents to know the full extent of the contamination they have been exposed to that they worry could increase their risk of cancer. A new Associated Press analysis of data from the agency — along with results from #NorfolkSouthern’s contractors who are carrying out the cleanup and independent testers in East Palestine — raise questions about whether the EPA is disclosing everything it knows. The agency’s lack of transparency, combined with independent tests that appear to show lingering problem areas in town, are making it hard for some residents to trust the EPA."

Kanchanjunga Express accident: goods train driver violated speed restriction norms, says Railway Board

The board said though the driver of the goods train was given authorisation to cross all red signals as the automatic signalling system was ‘defective’, the train’s speed was above the permissible limit; however, loco pilots’ body claimed the crew was not at fault because the authority letter suggested that the line in the section was clear.

#NorfolkSouthern Lifts Ohio #Derailment Cost to Over $800 Million

Story by Esther Fung, July 27, 2023

"Norfolk Southern raised its estimate on costs associated with the #EastPalestine, Ohio, train derailment to $803 million, a move that sent its profit sharply lower in the second quarter.

"The updated cost forecast Thursday was more than double the estimate that the Atlanta-based railroad operator provided earlier this year.

"Executives said that the bulk of the costs are from the #environmental clean-up, and added that there may be additional legal costs, fines and penalties in the coming quarters. These are difficult to estimate, they said."
