#Tulipa ‘Washington’ (J Ligthart, 1981). We bought a bag of them 3 years ago on end-of-season sale and guerilla’d them into the park at the end of our street. They have been lovely for 2 years now and seem very durable.

Grey and rainy day. The perennials are getting bigger by the day, whilst the tulips still delight.
#Tulipa cretica 'Hilde', an old (said to be mid 1800s) selection of the species .

Alt: on white, several views of a potful of blooms. The flowers are small (~4 cm fully open), white petals with a pale pink blush on outside and ends, bright yellow throat and pollen. The leaves are strappy and few, each bulb produced 2-3 blooms on slender brown stems rising well above the foliage. Pleasant musky-floral perfume even when closed.
Slowly, ever so slowly, colours return to the garden. The height of later months is still missing. It is easy to forget how slowly spring gets going.
Tulipa Ayaan and Ballerina.
Despite the muntjac deer's best efforts there are still many tulips left. This beautiful variety Tulipa Ayaan, named in honour of feminist, activist and politician Ayaan Hirsi Ali.
