🎧 YOU ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO GIVES EACH ALBUM A FRESH LISTEN BEFORE VOTING

May as well come back into Symphonic Monday as heavily as possible, drawing from 1970 in the prog years –

Van Der Graaf Generator, "White Hammer" (1970)

The organ is commanded by Hugh Banton, the saxophone gets life from David Jackson, and the cornet is buzzed by Gerry Salisbury.

Monday means something symphonic, so let's have something old people heard on the radio by George Martin (aka the 5th Beatle), done in prog –

Van der Graaf Generator, "Theme One" (1971)

It is so good that John Peel replaced the orchestral version with VDGG's version.

@w0dz

One night, "Dead Finks Don't Talk" (Brian Eno) was on the radio. Next day, "Here Come the Warm Jets" was on my shelf.

A few years later, killing time in a secondhand record store (St Kevin's Arcade, Auckland), I saw that Robert Fripp played on this gatefold LP. So I bought it & entered the prog-rock rabbit warren.

VDGG's "Pawn Hearts" altered my brain.

"And I too, live inside me,
and very often don't know who I am"

1977 German pressing.

My favourite #vdGG album, the addition of the violin and its ethereal feel combined with its relatively accessible songwriting make this an excellent listen. I especially love the violin solo on The Siren Song, that might be my favourite track. The album came with a booklet of lyrics made with a typewriter by a previous owner, how cool is that!

#NowPlaying: #VanderGraafGenerator - Pawn Hearts
1971(?) Dutch pressing.

You rarely find #vdGG #vinyl releases priced lower than 20 (maybe even 25) here so it was incredible luck that I found one in absolute pristine condition for 15 quid! As for the album, I don't really quite understand side 2 (A Plague etc.) yet, but Man-Erg is really good, especially when the song breaks down with saxes sounding like seagulls come in. Proper chilling!

1976 NL pressing.

I venture into prog rock every now and then and I am particularly fond of #vdgg. This record has got some funkyness which I quite like. Unfortunate that the brilliant Meurglys III ends in a fade-out though... I got this for very cheap, normally a VdGG #vinyl would cost you €25, but this only cost me €9. I did have to make a Discogs page for it, though. Bonus: me posing with the record and making scans.

Congratulations to all Prog fans who recognise the lyrics,

"Yes I know it's
out of control, out of control
Greasy machinery slides on the rails …"

For everyone else, this track is barely under control for its 12 minutes or so of your time –

Van Der Graaf Generator, "Lemmings (including 'Cog')" (1971)

Although I first heard King Crimson's "21st Century Schizoid Man" when my tender ears were but 16 years old, this is the track that sent me down the Prog rabbithole –

Van der Graaf Generator, "Man-Erg" (1971)

Ten minutes of virtual insanity, and I only bought the bleeding gatefold LP because Robert Fripp was in the credits …

Maximum volume, if you want to sing along.
