Our tent in a winter storm. High winds are especially dangerous during winter hikes, as they efficiently remove body heat, which can lead to frostbite or even hypothermia. They can also affect visibility, making navigation and movement difficult. If the winds get too strong, pitching a tent might become impossible, so it's important to be aware of the situation.

EXTREME COLD ALERT:

For the first time since they changed the name from #WindChill #Warning, nearly all of the #Northland is under a #Extreme #Cold Warning from Saturday night through Tuesday morning.

Wind chills as cold as 45-below are possible. #Frostbite can form in as little as 10 minutes on exposed skin, plus the increase risk for #hypothermia if you are outside with improper clothing.

Please take it safe out there!

Woke up in middle of the night with dull pain in the toes.
Fingers, nose and ears also icy.
Probably just blood circulation to the extremities being restricted to preserve warmth at the core.
Pulled on some thick socks & extra blanket, rubbing hands to restore some circulation.
Annoying, but probably not Raynaud's phenomenon...yet.
Maybe 14℃ room temp. before turning on heating was a tad too stoic😓

@chad

I heard a brief interview about this yesterday on #CBC.

I thought it was quite the indictment of #yegTransit that some of the people who needed amputations other than unhoused people were newcomers to Canada *waiting for buses.* 😳😱😳

And given our city's constant push to destroy any semblance of stability for unhoused people, I was genuinely shocked that there were not MORE amputations among that population. 😢😡

Recognizing and treating frostbite (from the Cleveland Clinic)

What are the stages of frostbite?

Frostbite symptoms appear in three stages that include feeling:

Cold, sore and painful (frostnip).
Pins and needles (surface frostbite).
Numbness (deep frostbite).

If you notice any of the symptoms of the second or third stages of frostbite, get immediate medical treatment to prevent long-lasting damage.

Environment Canada weather warning for my part of the prairies:

Enjoy the weekend, everyone!

We still have too many #unhoused folks in tents, in a Canadian #winter, in one of the richest countries in the world... & more in #shelters & hotels... i.e. not appropriately housed!!! #Housing needs to be a #HumanRight, a place to live, & not a commodity/investment.

“Every day, we’re getting calls from people who are new to the streets, ... the fear is that people don’t actually know what it might take to stay warm."
We’re worried about #frostbite...about death."
