Does anyone by chance happen to know the state of the Escoria point-and-click framework for Godot Engine?
I see some recent commits on it over the past months, but there has been no release for over 2y now, and no official news on compatibility to recent Godot versions either.
My partner and I have plans for a small adventure game and I'm currently unsure whether I should continue to wait for Escoria or just go with Popochiu instead which seems to be way more active.
What do we call "Alt Games", "Experimental Games", "Weird Games" anymore?
Stuff like Yumi Nikki but even less structure, often no ending. Walking sims, stuff you can't otherwise ascribe a genre.
Adding a weekly stream to my schedule to cover those kinda games like I used to from 2014-2020 at least. Just not sure what to call it.
Devlog #14:
KEMOVERSE REACHES VERSION 1.1
TL;DR:
We're developing a Free software Gacha-TCG playable from the within the fediverse and we've reached the first milestone.
Here's the current stuff that has been implemented:
- Card roll system
- Core database structure for cards
- Basic support for storing pulls per player
- Time-based limitations on rolls
- Explicit account creation/deletion
- PLEROMA SUPPORT??
Shout-out to moon for carrying it all by himself and implementing it in an afternoon.
Version 2.0 is planned to have:
- Duels
- Card Creator
- Stat system
- Trading
- Inventory
- Default card bundle :pleroma_fox_tan:
- Standard card template
- Banners
More info can be found in our repository: https://git.waifuism.life/waifu/kemoverse
I want to give a thank to the devs that have started working on my silly project, (no particular order) VD15, Nyanide, pwm, Moon, Munir, Naiji, and everyone that has commented, liked, repeated or someway be interested in the project.
You're all awesome.
How are we continuing?
The development continues steadily on our free time.
I'm slowly also making cards as we go, to try out new styles, and search for a consistent art-style, at least for the first batch.
Based on the poll that I made the other day:
https://mai.waifuism.life/notes/a8pd3yavp1a700qv
The most wanted types of cards and their votes were:
- Niche anime 65
- Inside Jokes 71
- Original characters 82
- Fedi admins 99 votes
- OS-tans (fedi mascots too) 135 votes!!
I'll be focusing on these kinds of cards for the first batch, but any recommendations are still appreciated.

I wish I knew how to make a dither shader in 2d. This shader just limits the total colors in the scene so we get color banding from the lights... I've decided my time needs to go toward art, music, and dialog... I'll spend days fumbling around with shaders and it's a bad use of my time. #pixelart #gamedev
A couple of days' work and now I have a simple but dynamic music system in my game! A handful of different sound loops that harmonize with each other, and then depending on game context (what types of enemies are present, how many, what power-ups you have etc) I activate or deactivate the various sound loops. Adding music really gives the game a whole new soul! That I get stuck playtesting feels like a good sign!
I've just uploaded new Windows and Linux builds of my game, and now I'm *fairly* sure all the current levels can be completed successfully.
There was one that I discovered was utterly impossible to complete, not because of bugs but because of level design - fixing that without the editor was 'fun' so I need to get that working next!
[P] This is why my belief that neurotyoicals are just bad people has amped through the roof these past few months.

Learning 2D game dev, by myself, with an engine made by other people, means learning the hard way things like:
Every frame of every sprite for a particular entity should be the same size even if the content isn't.
The content of each frame should be placed exactly the same relative to the origin, whenever possible. Ideally centered in the image.
Just flip the sprite when changing directions, if you can tolerate things like your character appearing to be ambidextrous.
A little late for #ScreenshotSaturday, but have a frozen goblin and Zalia standing on its head
Reminder mostly to myself but also to anybody it speaks to:
Your #gamedev project (or anything) doesn't have to be finished ASAP. Every little bit you add, no matter how small, pushes you closer to creating a full experience.
This means it's okay to have lulls in progress from time to time, in fact it's probably a good thing because it gives you an opportunity to recharge your creativity and refine aspects that might be a bit lacklustre.
Powering through might get you somewhere faster, but slowing down the pace will help make sure where you end up is something you'll be more proud of.
