About #Apple's M4-based #macmini launch:

Mac mini was ruined for me once its RAM became non-upgradeable after M1. 🤬

I'm still running the last intel-based mini (2018) with DIY-upgraded RAM & #t2linux. I am not interested in these new ones from Apple as we have many equally powerful & portable mini PC choices (Asus NUC, Thinkcentre etc).

I’m a huge proponent for extending the lifecycle of older tech, so last night I installed #windows 11 on my intel #MacBook Air 2919 and low and behold the slow speed, always on fan any list of other minor paper cuts are all gone, seems windows runs better on this device than #MacOS.

This makes sense as #apples is all about M series chips right now.

What did surprise me however was most top tier Linux distros just don’t support this kit, needed to use #t2linux spin of Ubuntu or fedora

@JohnAtl I am curious to know if you ever succeeded with #t2linux.

I finally did, after numerous failed attempts with various distros on my 2019 Macbook Air.

Some distros just won't work. My main obstacle was that my laptop has two USB/Thunderbolt ports, but the installations typically require four.

The T2linux installation guide is a maze of branching and sometimes conflicting instructions, although I'm grateful to them for making T2 Linux possible for some.

I am eager to try #ZorinOS, but after much research and effort, I had to defer that dream.

#Zorin supports neither ARM nor the #t2linux project for T2 Intel Macs. Consequently, Zorin doesn't work natively in any Mac newer than 2017.

It also does not work usably in a VM on Apple Silicon, due to sluggish Intel emulation.

It might work in a VM within legacy Intel Macs, and that's where you come in. Is anyone using Zorin, with strong performance, within a VM on an Intel Mac with a T2 chip?

So a USB hub (not Thunderbolt) and an Ethernet adapter are essential.

I am grateful to all the #t2linux volunteer developers. I finally have Fedora working natively on my legacy Intel-based Mac.

I merely suggest that devs be more conscious and/or transparent going forward, about the need for Ethernet, external keyboard, external mouse, and non-Thunderbolt USB hub.

Just to keep the Fediverse #t2linux discussion going, I would like to reflect on my experience installing Fedora on my 2019 Macbook Air.

The laptop has just two I/O ports and no Ethernet port, limitations that lead to big trouble.

T2 distros typically lack built-in wifi support, several have no support for the built-in keyboard and mouse, and despite the flash drive, some distros need a live internet connection too -- Ethernet only.
