#equator

40 years ago today, aboard RRS Discovery III on my first trip to the Southern Ocean and #Antarctica, we crossed the #Equator into the Southern Hemisphere. King Neptune's court convened on the foredeck to charge and punish all of us newcomers, after which we were baptised in a makeshift pool.

Two of the photos here show me receiving my punishment and then using the shower in the pool to try wash off some of the sticky gunk that had been poured over my head. I would credit the photographer if I could remember who I lent my camera to.

I remember that I was charged with "duplicity", on the basis that I had asked to make several dozen photocopies of seismic observer's logsheet templates I had designed following the preceding trials.

@rodhilton IMO, nobody in the southern hemisphere, or living close to the #equator wants to hike all the way to the #US

They'd much rather live and prosper right where they are.

However, due to a) climate change and b) Americans' love of drugs, they're left with few options.

They didn't cause a) and don't have a b) problem. Yet, they're impacted by both.

Other countries, mostly autocratic regimes, try to empower the southern countries with the ability to be enterprising with a + b endeavors.

Alas, those with great power choose b) every time since it's easy money. Indenturing any in favor of fixing a, so b remains empowered.

1. Stop blaming regimes for aiding the south in being successful entrepreneurs, and 2. Stop blaming those wanting to join the party.

Just fix it, #congress

Or clear a path for those that actually want to!

balance of #phytoplankton populations in sea is shifting as result of human-induced #climatechange altering #oceans in profound ways. When u picture ocean you might imagine sparkling turquoise waters but recent research suggests swathes of world's #oceans may in fact b turning greener. leading culprit might be #climat change. while some waters r becoming more green particularly in low latitudes near the #equator others are growing more #blue as global #temperatures rise. bbc.com/future/article/2024051

Maritime Continent's Expanding Warm Pool: Climate Implications for Global Weather Patterns

Recent studies indicate that the tropical warm pool has doubled in size, raising questions about future climate impacts.

Continent extends beyond its geographical boundaries, thanks to its unique climatic contributions. Situated mostly along the equator, the region's shallow seas, such as the Java Sea

The Escalating Impact of #GlobalWarming on Atmospheric Rivers eos.org/research-spotlights/th paper: agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.co

"Ribbons of water vapor called #AtmosphericRivers wind through the troposphere, moving the planet’s #moisture from near the #equator toward the poles... Rising surface temperatures will continue to increase moisture content in the air, leading to a rise in atmospheric rivers overall"

Cole has been racing her #sailing boat solo around the world since October 2023. Right now, Cole is halfway between Chile and Australia at the #45th parallel in the vast #SouthernOcean.

Cole is the youngest of all racers, is in 2nd place and is the only Woman.

The 45th parallel south is a circle of #latitude that is 45 degrees south of the #Earth's #equator. It crosses the South Atlantic Ocean, the Indian Ocean, Australasia, the #Southern #Ocean, and Patagonia

It is the line that marks the theoretical halfway point between the equator and the South Pole.
Almost ALL of it passes through open #ocean.

This post is in honor of all #Women around the #globe 🫡💪🫂 ❤️.

A Major #Climate System Will Collapse Decades Ahead of Schedule and Unleash Devastation, Scientists Predict
#Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (#AMOC) acts like a huge conveyor belt that delivers warm water from the #equator to the poles and brings cold water back southward to the equator. In the process, the AMOC heats up Europe and cools the tropics, providing milder and more stable climate conditions in both regions.
Collapse would turn #Europe into #Alaska.

Hey, people who live at or near the #equator! I need your help.

I need #artReference of the #Moon, specifically from near the equator. If you'd like to help, please:

• Reply with a photo showing the Moon and the horizon in the same frame.
• Specify its phase at the time, especially whether waxing or waning.
• Whether it was closer to sunrise or sunset when the picture was taken.

#boostswelcome !

I can't promise much for helping me, but when I finish the picture that I need this for I can share it?

_Anopheles stephensi_, a #malaria-#vectoring #mosquito usually found in urban environments in #India, the #Arabian #Peninsula, and other parts of #Asia, has now been detected for the first time south of the #equator in #Africa.

The authors suggest that this #vector may actually be quite prevalent and requires more sampling and testing in malaria-#endemic areas.
