People forget that Jonathan Demme was something of a madman before THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS garnered him mainstream respectability. I forgot how insane this shootout scene was in MARRIED TO THE MOB. Big hair, vibrant colors, big chewy performances from Mercedes Reuhl and Dean Stockwell, crazy editing. Almost like a trial run for TRUE ROMANCE four years later. But Demme had the vibe down before Tony Scott.

The women’s prison drama is also a subgenre that has enjoyed some popularity. In #ChainedHeat, #LindaBlair’s character must survive in a prison plagued by violence, rape, drugs, corruption and staff brutality. It’s often crudely photographed and edited, and the boom operator must be having bad days throughout the shoot. I didn’t enjoy it much, not to be confused with #JonathanDemme’s #CagedHeat. — #CineMastodon #FilmMastodon #80BMovieChallenge

The prompt is Support

Talking Heads, “Burning Down the House” from “Speaking in Tongues” 1983

Lyric:
“No visible means of support and you have not seen nothing yet
Everything's stuck together
I don't know what you expect staring into the TV set
Fighting fire with fire”

#TalkingHeads went through many phases, some of which I love passionately, some I don’t care for at all, but they were always interesting. They're in #funk mode on Speaking in Tongues, where we first heard Burning Down the House. The original was perhaps eclipsed by the incendiary live version featured in #JonathanDemme’s 1984 concert film Stop Making Sense.

In 1987 #DavidByrne appeared in a short, quirky film in a #PBS anthology series. Recently it occurred to me how this film and BDTH were thematically related, but I laughed it off.Turns out the film, “A Family Tree” was also directed by Demme. Hmm...
