Fellow nerds, gamers, and geeks, do you think the Miyoo Mini handheld is worth buying?
Some people may not know this but I have created a bunch of overlays to be used in Retroarch on modern Retro Handhelds. The ones that come with retroarch by default usually aren't designed for these low screen resolutions.
They should work with many of the most popular handhelds like the 35xx devices or miyoo minis.

Because I'm ancient, I completely missed the 90s #Pokemon thing. I was transitioning from Playstation to PC at the time, and old Gameboy stuff seemed... old.
But I see so much nostalgia for the franchise in retrogaming forums. Pokemon games seem to be the games people most want to play when they fire up their new #MiyooMini or #Anbernic device.
And I'm kinda jealous...
So I've decided to give a Pokemon game a real go. #FireRed on the #GBA is my game of choice, hope it lives up to the hype!
Got a Miyoo Mini+ a few days ago and I'm absolutely in love with this thing
It's a pure nostalgia machine.
Has all the games I used to play as a kid on it and you don't even have to swap around cartridges anymore
A recent copy of Retro Gamer highlighted Sega's Shinobi III on the #MegaDrive from 1993.
The first Shinobi game is an arcade staple from the late 80s - extremely popular, and for good reason. It's a firm favourite of mine from both back in the day and more recently on MAME.
The sequel, Revenge of Shinobi, was an early #MegaDrive exclusive and I think it's a classic.
I'd never played Shinobi III though and thought I'd give it a whirl on my #MiyooMini
It's great! Tight controls, better combat skills, more varied level types - they improved everything.

Received a Miyoo Mini Plus for my birthday a few weeks ago and I've been tuning it to perfection since then.
The fact is that I spend more time faffing about with these kinds of emulation devices than I do playing them.
I installed the preferred OS, OnionOS, refined the list of games to my Best Of, tuned my favourites list and am now scraping artwork for the selection menu.
There's still a bit more to do until it's in optimal running order but it's been fun and distracting getting it this far.

It's clear to me now that owning just a single #retrohandheld is not realistic. It's more sensible to own ALL of them.
But how do you seamlessly move between them, keeping your saves and states?
Enter "Syncthing": https://syncthing.net/
Syncthing is available just about everywhere and keeps folders in sync between devices. I've just spent a few days getting this configured on my devices and it works (mostly) great!
Read on for some tips...
When curating collections of retro games for UIs such as Emulation Station, which artwork do you favour?
I finally finished Super Mario World, only 30 or so years after it came out. I've not done the 100% run, just got to the end, and that was hard enough. The difficulty really ramps up in that final world. The haunted houses and castles were always trickier than then regular stages, but that final level was absurd. Old-man-reactions mean Save States are very necessary. I still think it's possibly the most perfect game ever created though. On to Yoshi's Island next.

@jcrabapple some emulation thingy like my #miyoomini, does that count?
if not, then old PC games?
if that's out too, then probably SNES or N64. N64 becomes better through emulation, but SNES has better games.

Not your typical use of the #MiyooMiniPlus, but I spent so much time playing LMA Manager 2002 when I was younger.
I remember a single save took up all 15 blocks on a PS1 memory card.
Created a new bezel for running #Pico8 (with integer scaling) on the #MiyooMini
Does it look familiar to anyone?
Native #Pico8 on #MiyooMini Plus?
Yes please!
I am SO happy right now
Now I just need a little USB hub for some on-the-go #GameDev

#Terranigma isn't going to replace #ChronoTrigger as my most favorite game ever.
much too slow story - enemies don't feel dangerous, story sounds okay but develops too slow
I don't even feel like like the different combat is nearly the worst problem - would have expected that (love tripple-tech, hate real time combat like zelda)
My first hours with the #Retroid Pocket 2S reminded me how easy setting up a #MiyooMini was... Starting from scratch, having to install standalone emulators, doing far more #RetroArch config than any sane human should have to do...
But I finally got there, and ended up withwhat seems like a really nice device. Comfortable to hold, really excellent sticks and triggers, it runs everything up to #Dreamcast and #PSP really well, and even a few #Gamecube games.
Now to actually play something...
So i'm checking the port section of #OnionOS as they added a #doom mod pack to the port section but i'm a tad...baffled with the selection.
Here's a long thread:
- For starters, it has a "fixed" version of Goldeneye Doom made for the korean #GP32, one of the first emu. dedicated #handhelds with linux. Mind you, the GP32 was released in 2001 and correct me if im wrong but Goldeneye Doom was first released in 2003.
I'm not sure if it is because of the lack of updates in the #Retroarch port of PrBoom+, but man they have been toying with this old ass outdated mod for 20 years. I thought this was because this specific mod was popular in asia or whatever but the main Onion OS dev is from Denmark so i don't know.
The other mods selected aren't much better either.
- First is Star Wars Doom '94, aka stardoom.zip. Why not include the '97 version instead?
- The next two are A Fistful of Doom and Ultimate Simpsons Doom which are probably the best of the selected mods i suppose, but mostly because of the effort the creators put on these the year both were released, '97 & '98 respectively. But still odd choices for the mod pack.
- This one killed me. Final Fantasy Doom, the one where you play as a Moogle and every sprite is a MSPaint doodle. I never liked this mod at all. It feels like a big shitpost with a FF coat of paint.
- Another mod is Half Life in Doom II which isn't even complete. Its just the first two HL levels before it crashes. This is another wad that has been around the internet forever, usually found in packs made for the #Dreamcast.
- This might be the most specific choice for the pack. This mod was released in 2005 i think, and replaces most sprites with monsters made of real legos. I barely played it but its probably one i could recommend.
- The other is countertrike.wad
Not sure how old is this one, there are several counter strike-themed mods for Doom but i have seen one shared around the PSP communities a lot.
- The last one is the Blood TC mod from 2006. Not even ZBlood, its the version that came before it. it plays okay i guess but its still very outdated.
I really dont know what even think about it. It isn't that the mods are bad, its that the dev only lets you play only this very specific list and nothing else. I really wish Onion OS could let you pick the mods you actually want to play instead of...well, these.

I got a Miyoo Mini+ and I’m looking for game recommendations:
- PICO-8
- TIC-80
- Homebrew NES, SNES, GB, GBC and/or GBA games (including GB Studio)
- Worthwhile romhacks
- Anything else??
