[1/3] #DANTE2025 Friday starts with “Storytelling with Frank [Mittelbach]”. He admits that it took a while for himself to realize how bad we treated users relying on assisting technology like screen readers! He tries to give a rough overview of this impression by playing screen reader recordings of an untagged document compared to the work the tagging-project did so far. The examples can be found at latex3.github.io/tagging-proje

#DANTE2025 is starting at the University of Applied Sciences Darmstadt.

Mr. Lion and me are extremly curious about discussions and expecting a boost concerning tagging and accesibility of #TeXLaTeX.

We already realized yesterday, that there is too little time for all the projects we are working on… but … we are all trying our best.

I will try to sum up the talks below this.

EN in first answer.

Was looking at the source to a very early arXiv paper (arxiv.org/abs/hep-ph/9210243). The PDF is unavailable, for reasons that are obscure ("pre-1996 submission which cannot be processed"). But there's a lot of history in the source code: it looks like it was submitted, as a single file, emailed from BITNET to the arXiv via a gateway. It also uses a now-obscure TeX package phyzzx (ctan.org/tex-archive/obsolete/).

I know I'll sound like a young person when I say this but I'd love to know how that worked in practice and what it was like to be in academia before everyone had access to a TCP/IP internet connection but after internetworked computers were ubiquitous. Sort of like the TV series Halt and Catch Fire but with physicists.

@clt_news

The pretest für #TeXLive 2025 has started!

In case you want to help finding bugs before the release have a look at tug.org/texlive/pretest.html

You can also install it additionally to your normal #TeX environment and fall back in case you face any issues. But it's always better to find issues as early as possible.

Of course we are building docker images for the pretest on the #IslandOfTeX again. I'll add more information as soon as they are published.

"#ComputerModern is the family of typefaces developed by #DonaldKnuth for #TeX. It's so good-looking that some scientists do research just so they can write it up in Computer Modern.

The cm-unicode project compiles versions of the Computer Modern fonts in a few formats, including TTF. I've run them through codeandmore's @ font-face kit generator and FontSquirrel to get all the weird formats that the various browsers insist on. This page shows off each typeface, with links to packages containing everything you need to use them in your own pages."

@ElenLeFoll Very legitimate question!

#Quarto is great for writing papers, books, presentations in #Markdown and for rendering them (using #Pandoc under the hood) to formats such as HTML, XML or PDF.

#Typst is great for rendering Quarto content to #PDF without the large installation and complexity that comes with using #Tex/LaTeX instead.

My current use case is creating a template for term papers. It would take most of the worries about layout and citations off of student's minds.

#TeX #LaTex related tools have very good support for PDF generation, but are focused on text based layout. Free graphical layouts are usually hard to do or require at least a lot of experience with the tool.

There are various #Python libraries for image and #PDF generation. That's currently my best option, but not a very convenient one.

Does somebody know a better option? HTML->PDF with better output than "Save as PDF" would be preferred.
