(Interesting homework, apply the list to commercials/ads you see!) the How much of Plato have you read? Machiavelli (read his far more interesting Discourses)? I found echos of this theme in Plato's Republic where he talks about various types of people etc. There is a thread of elitism all through history. You might enjoy Jacques Ellul *Propaganda* and *Technological Society Ellul was well known.
Anything by Jason Stanley. Bernays considered the *father* of propaganda/PR. Which brings us to Ewen *A Social History of Spin* "First throughout the interview, Bernays expressed an unabashedly hierarchical view of society. Repeatedly he maintained that although most people respond to their world instinctively, without thought, there exist an "intelligent few" who have been charged with the responsibility of contemplating and influencing the tide of history." ibid
This seems to echo Lippmann's view as well which Dewey was opposed to. Oddly Chomsky thought Dewey was as a bad as Lippmann. Dianora (Diane Bruce)
Those that own the media control the propaganda. If you have the money you buy up media from TV to newspapers. Then you can select what is shown. Walter Lippmann hinted at this, Ellul also talked about this and Chomsky of course has seen it happen. If you want to start shoving faux news at people and you have the money you own the media. Also make sure any publicly owned media is defunded. Must control the media.

#Propaganda #News #Chomsky #Lippmann #Ellul

PhloXO
Last night, scrolling YouTube, I was shown by my algorithm friend numerous videos of Noam Chomsky. Every single one of these videos was AI generated. Anyone who has ever seen Chomsky knows that his delivery is often flat and his arguments didactic. ‘There is a way to calibrate reaction. If it’s a crime of somebody else, particularly an enemy, then we’re utterly outraged. If it’s our own crime, either comparable or worse, either it’s suppressed or denied. That works with almost 100 percent precision.’

Noam #Chomsky

Linguist Noam Chomsky is interviewed by Common Dreams writer C.J. Polychroniou on the subject of ChatGPT in this May 2023 piece. Chomsky's stance on LLMs is that as long as we're not able to atomically understand what goes on in the statistical black box that currently is an LLM, linguists won't be able to benefit from being able to see whether it learns language like a human does, or not.

Today in Labor History May 18, 1814: Russian anarchist militant and philosopher Mikhail Bakunin was born. In Paris, in the 1840’s, he met Marx and Proudhon, who were early influences on him. He was later expelled from France for opposing Russia’s occupation of Poland. In 1849, the authorities arrested him in Dresden for participating in the Czech rebellion of 1848. They deported him back to Russia, where the authorities imprisoned him and then exiled him to Siberia in 1857. However, he escaped through Japan and fled to the U.S. and then England.

In 1868, he joined the International Working Men’s Association, leading the rapidly growing anarchist faction. He argued for federations of self-governing workplaces and communes to replace the state. This was in contrast to Marx, who argued for the state to help bring about socialism. In 1872, they expelled Bakunin from the International. Bakunin had an influence on the IWW, Noam Chomsky, Peter Kropotkin, Herbert Marcuse, Emma Goldman, and the Spanish CNT and FAI.
