Damn, reading up on Michelle Shocked (should have done this years ago). She's had an interesting life, and is a clearly complex person.
Raised in a strict religious household, she was soon a skate punk living in squats and protesting authority. She was arrested at the 1984 DNC for protesting against corporate influence in the party. She was arrested in 2011 for resisting the police breakup of Occupy Los Angeles.
In homophobic comments (or, in one case, a rant) in 2011 and 2013 she appeared to identify herself as a homophobe and speak at some length against gay marriage. She later said these were sarcastic, though witnesses disagreed. Since then she has denied being homophobic and publicly said she feels passionate love and can't imagine denying that to anyone else. She also said there is "nuance" to her attitudes about homosexuality that terms like "homophobe" don't address.
She's said that, being raised in a strict conservative Christian family, she was never allowed to explore her sexuality, and has hinted that she is bisexual or pansexual. This is, of course, expecially interesting in the context of her apparently anti-gay commments.
Michelle Shocked has been accused of alienating her audiences, one after another: from skate punk to folk-punk (note: Anchorage, linked here) to "Captain Swing," an album of literally big band swing music she repeatedly left fans behind.
She refuses to allow her songs (she's retained all the rights) on Spotify due to its shitty treatment of artists. She also refuses to post her music on YouTube, iTunes, or Amazon.
This is a complex person.
