Formaldehyde Causes More Cancer Than Any Other Air Pollutant. Little Done to Curb the Risk
propublica.org/article/formald

* WHO: formaldehyde = carcinogen
* EPA: 320M Americans live in areas where lifetime cancer risk from outdoor exposure to formaldehyde 10x higher EPA limit
* Trump vowed to roll back regs he views as anti-business
* typical home has formaldehyde level >3x higher than EPA limit

ProPublicaFormaldehyde Increases Your Cancer Risk No Matter Where you LiveThe Environmental Protection Agency’s attempts to reckon with formaldehyde have been repeatedly thwarted by the companies that rely on it. If the past is any guide, even modest steps toward reform are all but guaranteed to hit a dead end under Trump.

Darren Incorvaia: The fruit fly revolutionized biology. Now it’s boosting science in #Africa: Researchers across the continent are turning to the humble insects for experiments

"When Amos Abolaji returned to Nigeria from a year abroad, he brought home a strange souvenir — two jars full of fruit flies.

The biochemist had been conducting postdoctoral research at the Federal University of Santa Maria in Brazil on the health effects of certain pollutants. He had used laboratory rodents while working on his Ph.D. in #Nigeria and wasn’t previously exposed to the use of fruit flies. But when Abolaji joined toxicologist Joao Batista Teixeira da Rocha’s lab in Brazil, 'he told me he stopped the use of rodents for research.' Rocha had switched to using the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster."

Recycling toxic car tyres through the body and the environment

When tyres are used, tiny particles of rubber are released and accumulate on road surfaces. These particles can be washed away by rainwater into storm drains, ultimately ending up in nearby water bodies such as rivers, lakes, and oceans.The particles contribute to a range of negative health impacts including heart, lung, developmental, reproductive, and cancer outcomes.

Tyre wear particle (TWP) are generated by contact between tyre and road surface during driving, acceleration and braking.>

Tires are a complex source of pollutants including whole tires, particles, compounds, and chemicals. As they wear, tires emit pollutants via atmospheric, aquatic, and terrestrial pathways.>
sciencedirect.com/science/arti

Tyre wear particle emissions have outweighed those from the exhaust and are potential for microplastic pollution.>
sciencedirect.com/science/arti

Tyre wear particles pollute the environment, the air we breathe, the water run-off from roads and has compounding effects on waterways and agriculture.
