@LambdaCalculus
As long as "cheap chinese clones" only try to bamboozle with specs and not get their documentation and drivers onto an acceptable standard (and the #Pi5B sets the bottom line here!), noone wants to buy those.

  • I literally have a #BananaPiZeroM2 that I bought during the great #PiShortage but I never bothered to use it anywhere because it's more hassle than to antenna mod a #Pi0W or #Pi0W2 and call it a day because it doesn't require me to download some janky custom image to get even a regular 80x25 #Linux CLI up and running.

I think a lot of those cheap #RaspberryPi "clones" are just lazy attempts to just throw some #SBC together and oit the door withoit putting in any #effort...

For example, the #BananaPiZeroM2 should run circles around the #Pi0W as it even comes with the best mod ever right out of the box.

Instead, they feel like a chinese knockoff with basically nonexistant documentation...

Compared to that anyone could propably port @OS1337 to the original #Pi1B v1.2 within a week if they wanted to, as it's relatively standard #32bit #ARMv5r11 with all the published documentation...

@CraftComputing @Raspberry_Pi it's similarly shit like the #BananaPiZeroM2 / #BPi0M2 because if a CS professior can't get an SBC to output anything but 720p60, it's the fault of the company that creates it - not the users buying it.

#Apps make #OperatingSystems,
Operating Systems make #Hardware.

That's why people put up with the shit of #Apple and some even can tolerate #Microsoft apparently...

Whereas one can basically DIY a #Linux #distro for the #RaspberryPi just from the #LinuxFromScratch & #Raspberry Foundation's documation.

Try that with a #BananaPiZeroM2 that even people who do Computers for a living and teach in them can't even get the few systems that support it to run on anything but 720p60.

@ethanOS thx but I'm still figuring out how to get the #BananaPiZeroM2 #BPi0M2 working as a drop-in replacement for the @Raspberry_Pi #Pi0W & #Pi0 since #RaspberryPi seems more unwilling than unable to get units sold via their distributors at #MSRP.

Cuz the scalpers charge €60+ for a #Pi0W and €120+ for a #Pi0 v1.3 when both are actually €10 and €5 MSRP.

Industrial customers however seem to get double-digit numbers at MSRP just fine...

@Natanox As much as I'd consider alternatives to @Raspberry_Pi since their stuff is being scalped beyond insane, a lot of those suffer from poor software support, worse availability and even higher prices.

That being said I do use a #BananaPiZeroM2 / #BPi0M2 since the #Pi0/#Pi0W is being scalped >10x it's #MSRP and I've yet to find a good #CM4 / #Pi4B replacement that isn't out of production, double the price or unsupported by even @ubuntu or #Debian...

@aallan @Raspberry_Pi thx.

The excellent #documentation of #RaspberryPi products is what really made the huge ecosystem bloom.

Cuz as we can see with several competitiors, just throwing #hardware out into the wild doesn't guarantee any success.

And noone's really in a hurry to get a #BananaPiZeroM2 when it refuses to do 1080p no matter the configuration... youtube.com/watch?v=51OMXTElSt
