Chile's Indigenous communities in the lithium-rich Atacama Desert are in talks with two of the nation's biggest miners to gain more influence over plans to increase extraction of the battery metal. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/environment/2025/04/08/energy/chile-lithium-indigenous-control/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #environment #energy #chile #southamerica #latinamerica #energy #batteries #lithium #indigenouspeople #mining #sustainability
Do you think sodium has a shot at catching on?

Trump tariffs to cause chaos for climate transition, especially in USA.
China’s utter dominance in manufacturing green tech is unwise for the rest of the world, but rebalancing would need a less chaotic and destructive approach.

2 #Fiat 500 - 2009 #petrol and 2023 #electric - to be fair, the #EV version hasn't grown that much in size considering the space required for the #batteries
The really, really good news about the #tariff mayhem is that it will supercharge the #energytransition: While it is regrettable that the economy will suffer, everybody with a functioning pocket calculator (so alas, not everybody-everybody, ha) will have to admit that the only suitable way forward with falling prices for #solar and #wind and (most notably!) #batteries is to double down on #renewables. So either way forward will lead to #change - it's just a question what countries will lead it.
Seawater is an electrolyte, that is why we can use cathodic protection for metals we submerge in it. But it also means we can make #batteries with seawater... assuming we can overcome the many, many complications related to the complex ionic mix that is #seawater.

Guess who benefits most from this initiative & who misses out? Important analysis from Gavin Dufty.
Households without solar can dramatically reduce their power bills by switching to a wholesale provider & buying at very low or sometimes negative prices when there is a surplus of renewables in the grid. We did this for a year before we installed solar & it reduced our electricity bill by half. I concluded then that solar works at household level only when it’s supported by a battery.
Rooftop #solar plus community #batteries is what we need more of. Until then, if you can shift most of your usage away from peak times a #wholesale provider is the way to go.
I've just discovered Victoria has a community battery grant scheme, applications now closed, building should start soonish. Hopefully it will benefit everyone because it will mean less need for generating plant.
I don't care about the politics, I just want firmed renewables.

#Australia's "Federal Labor has confirmed it will spend $2.3bn to slash the cost of household #batteries by 30%, as part of a dual cost-of-living and climate action pitch to voters.
The discount will be delivered by expanding the small-scale #RenewableEnergy scheme, which has been subsidising renewable energy equipment for more than a decade."
Battery subsidies are fine but when am I going to be able to use an electric car as a battery for my excess solar? Last I heard Australian safety regs were being reviewed, all I can say is hurry up.

@feather1952
I’ve been waiting for this sort of ‘green’ incentive… 30% is making inroads to cut current costs whihc undermine the viability (long term) of home #batteries. From what I’ve read the current threshold is in the $300-$400 range per KWh. That would make a financially viable battery at $2,400 for a 6KWh battery - 30% discount won’t get it there yet unless production costs come down another 50% or so. But I’m sure we’ll get there in a few years.
In the meantime, we ought to legislate #EV to be #VtoL (Vehicle to Load) ready so that a charged up EV sitting in the garage can provide power to the house when solar panels aren’t active. Now that would be both a game changer in terms of Grid load and power generation as well as an added incentive to purchase an EV instead of an ICE vehicle.
Just some thoughts…
#AITA or does the #Fairphone3plus's #battery tend to #bulge pretty quickly?
Cuz I shouldn't be on the 3rd battery when I bought it mere days before it got discontinued...
Aunque no es comparable con el impacto enorme de la extracción de los combustibles fósiles, también hay que ser consciente del impacto del litio y minimizarlo.
