The best & most comprehensive article I have read yet about the impending #collapse due to #overshoot, and what we can, but why we won't, do anything about it.

Thank you Jack of all trades @jackofalltrades

"the risk that the world ultimately cannot stick to a path that rapidly phases out fossil fuels and avoids the worst climate outcomes. "

quite optimistic huh... did they take into consideration resources like copper to do so ? Even if there's not enough to mine, you need fresh water to extract copper.

And if there isn't enough doom-loops, we should also add geo-engineering for some funky unpredictable outcomes.

@marcowner

Glad you agree that the #collapse of civilisation is imminent. As you can see from my hashtag #Collapse2040 my guess is that it will be very soon.

What I mean exactly by that hashtag is that if you aren't growing your own food by 2040, you won't be eating. And if you are growing your own food, then roving bands of armed and hungry thugs will be trying to steal it from you.

So who will survive? Those who are able to hang on to large tracts of land, mostly the very rich who are buying it up at a serious rate now, and those that they pay to farm it, and to defend it. Payment will likely be as a share of the available food.

It sounds very feudal, doesn't it? Well, that's where we are headed, in my view. A few will survive as part of the feudal system described above rather than a complete extinction of the human race.

Life will be much, much harder, partly because it will be much harder to grow food than it was due to #ClimateChange and ecological destruction in general - few or no insects for pollination, poor degraded soil, unpredictable weather, and so on. The carrying capacity of the planet will be very much reduced, but I don't think we will go completely extinct.

(Hopefully Musk will have buggered off to Mars by then and won't come back, though I suspect that even he will work out that his idea of colonising Mars is entirely impractical.)

The scientific consensus is that the current rate of #extinction of all species is between 100 and 1000 times the background rate. That is the signature of a #MassExtinction event that has already begun, in this case, the #SixthMassExtinction on this planet. That is scientific fact, not a prediction.

Whether the human race becomes extinct as a result is less certain. The #collapse of civilisation as we know it much more certain, in my view.

It is Tuesday 12th November 2024. This climbing rose is in my garden in the Midlands of the United Kingdom.

There are no red grapes from Spain in the Coop food store at the end of my road, only green ones from Brazil.

The average global temperature for 2024 is about to exceed the 1.5C limit for #GlobalWarming set in the #ParisAgreement

#CO2 levels in the atmosphere are at a record high for the time of year and not just rising, but accelerating year on year.

The current #extinction rate of all species is between 100 and 1000 times the background rate. That is the signature of a #MassExtintion, the #SixthMassExtinction in the history of this planet.

Food prices here are increasing rapidly as #climate disasters and #ExtremeWeather hit various parts of Europe, which supplies 40% of our food, whilst in the UK the potato harvest is 15% down on the norm.

Our prime minister is at the 29th meeting of nations regarding #ClimateChange, #COP29, making meaningless promises about what will be done to fix it. The head of the meeting is discussing #oil and #gas deals with delegates from the #FossilFuel industry.

The question now is not whether #CivilisationCollapse will or will not occur, but when. And what disasters will occur and in what order as the majority of the population of this planet dies of hunger.

My prediction is that by 2040 if you are not growing your own food, you will not be eating. And if you are growing your own food, then roving armed bands of hungry thugs will be trying to steal it.

Now off to said Coop to buy quiche and pasta salad for supper while I still can.

COP29 chief exec caught promoting fossil fuel deals

A senior official at #COP29 #ClimateChange conference in Azerbaijan appears to have used his role to arrange a meeting to discuss potential #FossilFuel deals, the BBC can report.

A secret recording shows the chief executive of Azerbaijan's COP29 team, Elnur Soltanov, discussing "investment opportunities" in the state #oil and #gas company with a man posing as a potential investor.

"We have a lot of gas fields that are to be developed," he says.

2024 'virtually certain' to be world's warmest year on record

It is now "virtually certain" that 2024 - a year punctuated by intense #heatwaves and deadly #storms - will be the world's warmest on record, according to projections by the European #climate service.

Global average temperatures across the year are on track to end up more than 1.5C above pre-industrial levels, which would make 2024 the first calendar year to breach this symbolic mark.

These high temperatures are mainly down to human-caused #ClimateChange, with smaller contributions from natural factors such as the El Niño weather pattern.

Politicians not ambitious enough to save nature, say scientists

Scientists say there has been an alarming lack of progress in saving nature as the UN #biodiversity summit, #COP16, draws to a close.

The scale of political ambition has not risen to the challenge of reducing the destruction of #nature that costs the economy billions, said one leading expert.

Alarm call as world's trees slide towards extinction

Scientists assessing dangers posed to the world’s #trees have revealed that more than a third of species are facing #extinction in the wild.

The number of threatened trees now outweighs all threatened birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians put together, according to the latest update to the official extinction red list.

Big UK emissions cut needed, says climate watchdog

The UK needs to make huge cuts to its #GreenhouseGas emissions this decade to help the world avoid the worst impacts of rising temperatures, the government's #climate watchdog has said.

The #ClimateChange Committee (CCC) says the UK has the technologies to do this, but meeting the goal would require much greater investment in #RenewableEnergy, #ElectricCars and #HeatPumps.

While the UK has already cut its #emissions by more than 50% since 1990, the CCC says it should extend this to 81% by 2035, which would make a "credible contribution" to the international goal of limiting #GlobalWarming to 1.5C.

Wildlife numbers fall by 73% in 50 years, global stocktake finds

Human activity is continuing to drive what conservation charity the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) calls a "catastrophic" loss of species.

The report also warns nature loss and climate change are fast pushing the world towards irreversible #TippingPoints, including the potential "collapse" of the #Amazon rainforest, whereby it can no longer lock away planet-warming carbon and mitigate the impacts of #ClimateChange.

@jackofalltrades

#Collapse2040 is just a guess. And anyway #collapse will be about lots of different things happening over time. The date actually came from a story in Silent Earth by Dave Goulson towards the end of the book and I took it up because it just feels about right to me for a collapse of civilisation. It's a lot sooner than most people predict, but that's the point. Most people are so apathetic about our destruction of the environment that they think it won't affect them substantially in their lifetime. They are in for a shock.
