We need to #cycle more & it needs more than #safe #cyclepaths that go to useful places. We also need #lockable #storage in those places. There's no place for #bikes outside my #GP, the #supermarket #bikestand needs a heavy duty #lock (which I have to carry back with the #groceries). #Locks get cut off, unlinked parts get #stolen, #damage is done (seen it all). We need #secure #cyclelockers everywhere. #locker #parking for #bicycle, #helmet & #panniers.

Australian transport emissions are still growing.
"As a result, transport is expected to be our biggest-emitting sector by 2030. So, cutting transport emissions is crucial to Australia’s net-zero strategy."
"Current domestic emissions by transport mode are skewed. The vast bulk (85%) of total annual carbon-dioxide-equivalent (CO₂-e) emissions comes from road transport. It’s followed by air (8%), rail (4%) and sea (2%) transport."
"From an emissions perspective, high-speed electric rail is a great alternative to road and air transport for travel between capital cities. It would result in deep emission cuts varying from 75–95%."

Killer roads
"Five people died and four were injured in three car crashes across NSW since 2pm Monday. Federal data released this week shows the national road death toll increased 7 per cent from 2022 to last year, while the NSW toll jumped 25 per cent."

They call for more data on the "death Toll", money and more (killer) roads, but never for a radical infrastructure redesign. No data on "roadkill" of native animals either.
Australians rely heavily on private vehicles - combustion engines or EVs
"Car dependence causes various problems that are not adequately accounted for in current pricing regimes. These include carbon emissions, productivity costs of congestion, traffic deaths and injuries to people and animals, respiratory and systemic diseases from exhaust and tyre particles, and cardiovascular disease from sedentary behaviour."
EVs "generate many of the negative impacts of conventional vehicles, electric vehicles are not a sustainable mode of urban transport. And there is increasing recognition that moving from internal combustion engine vehicles to electric vehicles won’t reduce the impact of climate change within emergency timeframes."
"Australian cities need to move quickly and decisively away from the car as a means of urban transport. The best way to reduce damage from car use in cities is to reduce usage overall. "

Redesigning roads and intersections to put humans first – The Bellingen case
Bellingen just 'upgraded' Gleniffer Road (The $5.2M “gate way to the Promised Land”) and North Bank Road. Both put fossil fuel vehicles first and forgot emission free mobility for people.
But cyclists and foot traffic deserve the same direct routes that motorists have. Elsewhere they rethink transport planning to promote safer cycling and walking options. Another missed opportunity to put Bellingen on the map for pollution free country cruising.

Building cycle paths is just virtue signalling unless you maintain them (and keep drivers and their climate-killers off them) https://www.irishtimes.com/opinion/letters/2023/06/09/cycle-path-maintenance/ #CyclePaths #Litter #Maintenance
Today’s #cycle trip was to #Exmouth which is about 18 km away by #bike mostly on #cyclepaths. It has been a bright sunny day but still a bit cool. This is a #photograph of the #ExeEstuary which opens out into the #EnglishChannel. It was #LowTide and so you can see #SandBanks in the middle of the #estuary which form a #habitat for #birds but also a #NavigationalHazard. You can see the opposite #bank too which is in #Starcross.
Rush hour this morning on Bearsden Road in Glasgow vs rush hour on the cycle path alongside the Forth and Clyde Canal which passes underneath it.
If this is true, it's fantastic.
All they need now is improved #Cyclepaths, especially at junctions.
@modacitylife This (click through and scroll up )! North American urbanists talk about the wonders of the cycling network of “Amsterdam” seemingly without realizing that every city, every town, and every tiny village has a similar network, and each of these is connected by a rural #cycling network. You can ride #bikes safely anywhere you want to go in the whole country of the #Netherlands (those paths in the attached image are #cyclepaths, not highways).
It seems #yegcc isn’t even much of a hashtag yet on Mastodon, so I’m not sure how many people will care about this, but…the city council in #Edmonton (city of about a million people in western Canada) just opted to fund this bill, which includes ONE HUNDRED MILLION NEW DOLLARS to expand the network of protected #bikelanes!
