Got KOReader installed in my Kindle. It is literally upgrading the device for free.
I can now read EPUBs without having to convert them first to KFX.
Thanks to @hook I (re-)discovered #KOReader. Especially the #Nextcloud Notes integration got me hooked.
Gonna have to check out #Wallabag. Been using #Paperspan, but Wallabag might get piped to KO Reader (on #jailbroken paperwhite, phone, and tablet).
I got a hand me down 2015 Kindle Paperwhite from my daughter—is that a hand-me-up?—after we upgraded her to a new Kobo Libra Color.
I used #WinterBreak to jailbreak and got #KOReader installed and it’s a nice little reader that syncs easily with Calibre. No Amazon involved.
The Kobo Libra is an extremely nice #eReader with great integration with Overdrive/Libby to get library books, but if you’re looking to get something on the cheap and save some ewaste, I can recommend jailbreaking a kindle
KOReader is an ebook reader application supporting many formats, running on Cervantes, Kindle, Kobo, PocketBook and Android devices
KOReader is actually intended to replace your existing ebook reader software that runs on a Kobo or Kindle ereader. For Kindles, this will also mean you have to jailbreak them. But it can also install on Android, Linux and other OSs.

With #Mozilla yeeting #Pocket and Towel Day coming to an end, it was high time I rush to finish my blog about how I switched to #KOReader and #Wallabag to make my reading workflows better.
There is also a sprinkle of #Plato, #Nextcloud, #CalibreWeb, #OPDS and #YunoHost in the mix ;)

TL;DR:
• it’s easy to set up
• it takes a few hours/days to getting used to
• it’s very much worth it
@hollie
KOReader (https://koreader.rocks) can export notes, but unluckily the installation on MacOS is probably not very easy (https://github.com/koreader/koreader/wiki/Installation-on-MacOS).
Goodbye Kindle. Hello KOReader.
Maybe a long shot, but has anyone gotten KOReader and Nickelmenu running on a converted Tolino to Kobo ereader? Originally branded as a Tolino Shine Color and currently running as a Kobo Clara Colour. Usually it's straightforward on native Kobo (Linux) and works after some jumping through hoops on older Tolinos (Android) but this one has me stuck. It's pretty much Kobo, but not all? I have already visited GitHub, Mobileread and e-reader-forum (de).
I like reading #ebooks on both my phone and an #ereader. I used to read on Kindle because it kept the books in sync, regardless of where I bought them.
But now I use #KOReader on my #Kobo ereader and my phone, and it also syncs them, but with the added benefit that Amazon doesn't track my reading.
I can recommend it.
I have found a cheap old 7" Samsung tablet and I've managed to install a custom ROM. it is upgraded from Android 5 to 7.
Not terrible but it removed all bloat preinstalled apps and permitted to install #KOReader from f-droid.This soft is very good to transfer such devices to eBook reader.
I will wait before buying a #kobo
GitHub - flip-rossi/readeck.koplugin: A KOReader plugin to add integration with your Readeck instance. https://github.com/flip-rossi/readeck.koplugin #read-it-later #OpenSource #koreader #readeck #GitHub #plugin #lua
So, a while back was asking about an alternative to Kindle/Amazon ecosystem. Went for a PocketBook Inkpad 3 #ereader on which I installed #KOreader and I'm using a #selfhosted #kavita instance to manage my online library. On top of that I found a number of #drmfree stores and publishers.
It feels So much better to have been able to leave the more and more restrictive boundaries and, even more importantly, to actually OWN the #books!

Today I successfuly jailbroke my Kindle ebook-reader and thus can use it for ebooks originating not from the big "A".
If you want to do the same I recommend this video for an overview:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qtk7ERwlIAk
And then these detailled instructions:

Last not least you may want to install this App on your computer to manage your ebooks in future:
https://calibre-ebook.com/
Saddly I did not find the option promoted in the video to setup my own screen saver (no important feature but would have been nice). And also the backing-up of the already purchased Amazon titles did not work. Appart from that everything looks quite promising now.
If you are the owner of a jailbroken #Kindle and you use #KUAL and #Koreader, it suddenly stopped working few days ago.
There is a fix at the mobile read forum by the developer of KUAL go to this page:

Download the file titled DevCerts-20250419-KeyStore.zip
Select the .bin file that matches your kindle generation (mine was k5) and using a usb cable copy it to the root folder. 1/2

Less than a week into my new #BOOX Note Air4, and I already don’t know how my life was before it.
This device is amazing. After years spent using old B&W notebooks and synchronizing them to SD cards, I have a notebook that runs a modern version of Android, and with a Notes app that actually supports WebDAV synchronization - which means that my notes will be available as PDF files on my Nextcloud instance as soon as I close them.
Since it runs Android pretty much without restrictions, I’ve also proceeded with installing F-Droid on it and Fennec, Element, my RSS app, Nextcloud Notes and ntfy.
Oh, and since it’s basically an Android tablet with a color e-ink screen and 6GB of RAM you could also watch videos on it (but again just because you can it doesn’t mean that you should).
And its AI features are also nice an unintrusive. Wrap some handwritten stuff in a square/rectangle, and it can easily be converted into text. Do a messy scribble on something, and anything underneath will be erased (although I still think that the double-sided pen/eraser gadget shipped with the Mobiscribe was more intuitive).
And this device really shines with the #KOReader app. It turns it into a powerful e-book reader, and with #Wallabag, RSS feeds and OPDS support (synchronized with my personal library running on #Ubooquity) you can’t ask for more.
Oh, and shall we talk about the ability to run SSH sessions on an e-ink tablet?
If anyone happens to use #KOReader...
How TF do I hide the keyboard letters from the bookcovers in the browser? This device is touchscreen, hitting letters to open books isn't helpful
