"Newark Mayor Ras Baraka was arrested Friday at a federal immigration detention center where he has been protesting its opening this week, a federal prosecutor said.

"Alina Habba, interim U.S. attorney for New Jersey, said on the social platform X that Baraka committed trespass and ignored warnings from #HomelandSecurity personnel to leave #DelaneyHall, a detention facility run by private prison operator #GeoGroup.

"Video shows the mayor standing on the public side of the gate

"In video of the altercation shared with The Associated Press, a federal official in a jacket with the logo of the Homeland Security Investigations can be heard telling Baraka he could not join a tour of the facility because 'you are not a congress member.'

"Baraka then left the secure area, rejoining protesters on the public side of the gate. Video showed him speaking through the gate to a man in a suit, who said: 'They’re talking about coming back to arrest you.'

" 'I’m not on their property. They can’t come out on the street and arrest me,' Baraka replied."

One bonus of a #GOP majority in executive & legislative branches will be #megadonors getting rewarded with #taxbreaks and exclusive federal contracts that will stimulate the #PrivatePrison economy

#DJT can finally build Chinese-style #slavelabor camps to reward #incarceration inc industry donors and begin ousting weak law abiding embedded #CivilService workers cluttering federal agencies. #MAGA
#Project2025 will make everything so much easier!

How do private companies justify taking on criminal justice functions? I use ESG reports from CoreCivic to describe 3 rhetorical practices: softening (obscuring the use of force); shrinking (demonstrating deference to the state); and signaling (proclaiming alignment with pro-social values). I hope these categories are useful for studying legitimation work by other private firms and industries in the criminal justice system. #privateprison #criminology

The #US #legal system is not at all about #justice, but about justifying our #carceral #PrisonIndustrialComplex which imprisons people at a much higher rate than any other country—about as many as #China—while, obscenely, inhumanely, and unjustly, creating massive #profits for both "#PrivatePrison" #corporations and contractors for #government-run #jails and #prisons.

Our entire system must be rebuilt, and #courtrooms need to be included in that process.
