He was also an athlete and competed in the NATO Games. He was a cross country skier, a distance runner, speed skater, and a sharpshooter. His professional competition sport was biathlon. He once told me that he was the one who came up with the skating style of cross country skiing, but I don't know about that. But who knows? “I think my chances are pretty good. The preparation is looking good for me.”

It took a little time to adjust to the mindset of long track speedskating, said Alison Desmarais.

She switched to the long track discipline after competing in short track for a while.

Desmarais is hoping the switch and her hard work in the sport will pay off and she’ll see a berth on Team Canada at the 2026 Winter Olympics.

The Métis Nation of Alberta member competes with the Canadian national NextGen (developmental) team in long track speedskating. She’s in her second season and trains in Calgary. Desmarais was a member of the Canadian national NextGen (developmental) short track squad from 2018 to 2020, but that group trains in Montreal.
