Data-based #ComputationalModeling of #Tuberculosis transmission risk in a clinic. Points to importance of ventilation & masks. journals.plos.org/ploscompbiol

journals.plos.orgEstimating Mycobacterium tuberculosis transmission in a South African clinic: Spatiotemporal model based on person movementsAuthor summary In crowded indoor settings in high tuberculosis burden countries, there is a high risk of tuberculosis transmission. We developed a model to study how tuberculosis is spread in a South African clinic during the COVID-19 pandemic when masks were mandatory and ventilation was improved. We tracked the movements of clinic attendees with video sensors and matched them with clinical records to find where and when infectious tuberculosis patients were present. We used this information to estimate the concentration of infectious particles in the air and the risk of infection for individuals. Over five days, the sensors tracked nearly 1,500 people in the clinic. Air quality was generally good, but the concentration of infectious particles was higher in the morning and peaked in the waiting room. The average risk of infection per person was found to be 0.05%. The risk increased with more close contact with infectious patients and longer time spent in the clinic. Without masks, the risk was 1.3 times higher. With lower ventilation rates, similar to pre-pandemic levels, the risk was 2.1 times higher. This modeling can help identify high-risk areas for tuberculosis transmission and evaluate infection control measures in healthcare facilities.

John Anderson presented “The Environmental Basis of Memory”, at #SPP2023’s #preconference on #memory.

Dr. Anderson applied “rational analysis” of human cognition (based on only goals, the environment, and constraints of the cognitive system) to explain memory (with Milson in 1989) and find evidence for this (with Schooler in 1991).

More recent #bigData from #Reddit and #Twitter fit the model.

Isaac Davis presented "Inferring the Internal Structure of Social Collectives".

Isaac, Yarrow Dunham, and Julian Jara-Ettinger designed social vignettes to test their computational model of how people infer social structure (e.g., hierarchies) from a domain-general statistical learning mechanism and domain-specific social knowledge.

They think 2 experiments "support our account".

🚨 Raquel G. Alhama and I will be hiring a PhD student soon. 🚨

We are looking for a computationally minded cognitive scientist or a cognition oriented computer scientist.

It will be Bayesian computational modeling and neural networks joining forces to understand human sentence processing.

Starting date is this year before September, the call will be out soon (with a link to apply).

I've been reading Reichle's "Computational models of reading: A handbook", and he points out a sad state of affairs for sentence processing:

1. There are very few computational models (that is that were truly implemented).
2. There are very few clear benchmark effects for the models.

A question for the psycholings: *What should a computational model of sentence processing capture?*

A quick #introduction. I shifted here from #Twitter a few weeks back and will continue to jump back and forth until the foot no longer lands in the other spot. Anyway, I am a neuroscientist who uses #neuroimaging, #ComputationalModeling, to build brain theories of resilience and adaptation. I'm also an amateur #musician with a small but mighty band in #PortMoody. I'm also an avid #runner, so that I can sample the wide array of #craftbeer out here. #toot on y'all.

#introduction
Hi, I am excited to meet new people and old friends here!
I share stimulating research on #humanbehavior, #cognition, #evolution, #culturalevolution, #cooperation, #complexsystems, #religion, and #ritual and hope to learn more about #computationalmodeling, #human-AI interactions, and #Bayesian statistics. I also share resources on #statistics, #Rstats, and #openscience and promote our lab's work.
I am always open to chatting about coffee.

#introduction Hi all!

I'm a clinical #psychologist, cognitive #neuroscientist, & #computational modeler. I use #reinforcementLearning to understand how learning from rewards and punishments goes awry in #anxiety #trauma and #depression to improve how #psychotherapy (esp CBT) and other treatments work. I also work on how to measure #behavior better using #computationalModeling (esp with #bayes & #stan), and how science can benefit communities typically marginalized in medical research.
