Tonight I found myself in a deeply unpleasant social situation: the kind of atmosphere where you feel more like a prop than a human being. It helped that I had a dear friend on tap who knows my empathy and sensitivity very well. Even five years ago, I would have reacted with hurt and anger. But I excused myself with peaceful class, grace, and dignity. And my friend said she was proud of me. We are taking back the night. And I didn't lose my shit.

I'm learning, folks. Slowly.

I just had some douchebag on the subway try and knock my book out of my hands with a hard slap. Ten years ago, there was a chance that I would have beat this guy to a pulp for such an act. But today? I let him go. I have worked very hard to be less angry. It helped that a fellow Brooklynite sitting next to me started cracking jokes. And the two of us laughed over this.

Nevertheless I'm still stunned that this punk didn't faze me at all. Apparently I have matured quite a bit.

-> At the same time, it may be a distraction – an easy way to focus on the surface to avoid deeper, more pressing issues like inequality, environmental degradation or the fragility of our mental well-being (which is also reinforced by this superficiality). If we put half as much energy into cultivating character, compassion & sustainability as we do into chasing eternal youth, well 🤷🏻‍♀️

A quotation from J. M. Barrie

All children, except one, grow up. They soon know that they will grow up, and the way Wendy knew was this. One day when she was two years old she was playing in a garden, and she plucked another flower and ran with it to her mother. I suppose she must have looked rather delightful, for Mrs. Darling put her hand to her heart and cried, “Oh, why can’t you remain like this for ever!” This was all that passed between them on the subject, but henceforth Wendy knew that she must grow up. You always know after you are two. Two is the beginning of the end.
