I’m Dr. Velvet Fingers, Chief Linguist at Gollyudeaf University. I’m thrilled to announce that we’ve teamed up with… God. Yes, that God. To create a brand-new, official ASL name sign. This was a long, harrowing journey— Eight months of linguistic research, International community feedback, And… accidentally starting a religious war. We consulted Catholics, Baptists, Orthodox Jews, Evangelicals, Several witches, two Mormon Deaf elders, A Satanist in Ohio, And one guy on TikTok who insists he is God. [Pause.] With the world on fire… I couldn’t help but wonder: Is this really the best way to spend our time and power? Anyway! Ready for the sign? [Points upward.] [Beat.] That’s it. That’s the sign. We call it… “God.” Because he’s up there. Apparently. Thanks for believing in the process. [Looks off-camera.] Can I get a Coke? Tein aiemmion kyselyn tästä emojista/käsimerkistä (🤟).
Halusin nähdä kuinka ihmiset tulkitsevat tai tietävät ennestään kyseisen käsimerkin tarkoituksen. Äänestystuloksen perusteella 14% äänestäjistä tiesi käsimerkin alkuperäisen merkityksen.

Kyseessä on hyvin vanha käsimerkki. Merkin tarkoitus on ilmaista "I love you" tai "love you". Sanojen ensimmäiset alkukirjaimet sormitetaan samanaikaisesti sormiaakkosina eli I, L ja Y.

Käsimerkin historia on pitkä, se ulottuu 1900-luvun tienoolle ja on tullut alkujaan amerikkalaisesta viittomakielestä. Kyseinen käsimerkki on levinnyt viime vuosikymmeninä sosiaalisen median kautta laajasti yleiseen käyttöön ympäri maailmaa. Tätä käytetään myös täällä meillä Suomessakin viittomakielisten kesken.

Tell your representatives that you support the Americans with Disabilities Act and providing d/Deaf people and Hard of Hearing people with ASL interpreters at EVERY government communication.

Want to learn? Awesome! Thank you.
I'm learning BSL (when I'm not increasingly sick -- wear your mask please) cuz I live in the UK.

If you live in the USA, then lingvano.com/asl/ and

I’ve posted a bit about how I’m finally learning ASL. I finished ASL 101 last week and loved every second of it. Which is why I want to tell y’all about the amazing place where I take classes in case you want to as well. Registrations for the March–May cycle are still open! queerasl.com/registration

A bit about the people behind these classes: Queer ASL provide 2SLGBTQQIA+ positive, accessible, and affordable (donation-based!) online ASL classes. They also offer specific classes for BBIMP (BIPOC) folks and classes for people with disabilities, that each center those identities. Most of the classes are timed for US/CAN timezones but some of the early US morning classes should work well for European folks too. Might be a bit late for Indian timezones etc unless you’re a nights owl.

So if you’ve always wanted to learn ASL but never really found the right place, then give Queer ASL a shot. The fact that it’s queer-centered, Deaf-taught, and online was what made it super easy for me to decide to take the plunge and I’m so glad I did.

See you in class maybe? 🤟🏻

Why are so many young people from the USA choosing courses on American Sign Language at school and college?

Three guesses as to motive:

- A thoroughly laudable desire to learn something of benefit to the wider community.

- A less laudable but understandable hope that ASL will be easier than Spanish, French, or other foreign languages.

- Worryingly, an unspoken but powerful drive to evade confrontation with cultures and histories that differ from those of the USA.

I might be wrong on all three counts, of course!
