#Maine - #EasternTrail

"The Eastern Trail is a 62 mile multi-use, non-motorized greenway, that connects Bug Light in Casco Bay, South Portland to Kittery, Maine. Approximately thirty percent of the trail is off-road, and the trail is a part of the #EastCoastGreenway which will eventually connect #CalaisMaine to #KeyWestFlorida, approximately 3000 miles. The Eastern Trail is currently composed of 21 miles of off-road trails on the former Eastern Railroad bed with the remainder 41 miles on public roads.

"The entirety of the Eastern Trail is built to ADA standards. The trail surface varies between pavement and stone dust/gravel. Most of the trail is 10-12 feet wide, with some sections with an 8-foot width. There is a 30-inch opening between the bollards at entrances to keep out motorized vehicles, but wide enough to allow access for wheelchairs.

"The off-road section connecting Scarbrough to Saco privdes access to the 2200-acre Scarborough Marsh, which is Maine's largest salt marsh. Heading north on the trail from Pine Point (ME-9) or south from Eastern Road in Scarborough provides access to this 2.5 mile stretch of trail.

"Heading south from Pine Point Road, the trail crosses the York County and Cumberland County boundaries and users can walk/bike from Scarborough, through Old Orchard Beach to Saco, where the current-off-road trail ends at Thornton Academy in Saco, approximately 6 miles from the Pine Point kiosk.

"There are kiosks at 3 parking areas, that give some history and points of interest along the trail. For example, the Eastern Trail is built on the old Eastern #Railroad line that was built in 1840 and abandoned in 1945. Also, Charles Lindberg flew into the now abandoned Scarborough airport several times. And, a trestle once carried open air trolleys from the rail line to Old Orchard Beach for summer tourists."

In a #Cleveland suburb, this old #CoalPlant will soon be replaced by a massive #SolarFarm

Inside Climate News
July 26, 2024

"#CoalFired power plant that started running more than a century ago is about to get a long-overdue retirement, and its electricity will be replaced by a solar farm and a #BatteryStorage system on an existing #brownfield.

"The project in #PainesvilleOhio, a suburb of Cleveland, is one of about two dozen clean energy and emissions-reduction initiatives across the country that are sharing $4.3 billion in funding announced on Monday by the #BidenAdministration.

"It was a happy day for Doug Lewis, Painesville’s city manager. He and his colleagues have been considering how to close the city-owned power plant and replace it with a cleaner alternative. They also have wanted to redevelop the site of a long-shuttered #chemical factory near the shores of Lake Erie.

"The federal government will now pay about $80 million to install solar and batteries on the former factory land and to beautify the rest of the brownfield by planting a #meadow of #wildflowers and constructing a #BikeTrail. The trail will provide a connection between Painesville and a regional trail that runs along the lake.

[...]

"The solar farm will have capacity of 35 megawatts and the battery storage system will have capacity of 10 megawatts. It will be capable of running for three hours at that level before recharging.

"The new construction will be on land that once was home to the Diamond Shamrock Corp. chemical plant, which operated there from 1912 to 1977 and occupied about 1,100 acres. The plant’s products included baking soda, chromium compounds, and hydrochloric and sulfuric acids.

"Since the site closed, the community and the federal government have gone through the slow and trying process of removing #pollutants to make it site safe for redevelopment.

The current project can serve as a case study for many things, including regional cooperation. Painesville, in Lake County, worked with officials in neighboring Cuyahoga County and the Cleveland city government to file an application with the federal government that included #RenewableEnergy projects for all of them."

The Newport good line bicycle bridge (aka. "Brooklyn Bridge") on the Federation Trail opened in 2014 after decades of advocacy from cyclist groups.

It was closed for 4yrs in July 2018 for Westgate Tunnel freeway works to allow them to widen the freeway to 12 lanes and build a tunnel entry for the new tunnel.

The 2km detour around this bridge is on a dangerous 60km/hr road with trucks and without any bicycle infrastructure. It's completely unusable . Nothing has been done to improve this detour for the entire closure of this bridge.

As of tomorrow (17th July) the bridge will have been closed for 6yrs and the indication is that it won't be open for at least another year.

Lots of improvements are being made to connect the Federation Trail through to the city, but none of them require this bridge to be closed. The bridge is and has been in a completely usable state for years. It only remains closed for the convenience of access for the freeway works.

Here is a video of the state of the bicycle bridge filmed in February this year.

As an American, I tend to use a term more referencing the backside than the front side of a person for such people LOL, but yes... we have those here, too.

There are no legal speed limits on #BikeTrails, and I think that's part of the problem. Before #ebikes, that was unnecessary. And simply banning non-manual #bikes (usually just via trail rules, not legislated through laws) was enough.

But a lot of people have bought #ebikes for the purpose of long rides, and those trail rules have just been repeatedly ignored.

Most #ebikers ride safe, as a lot of them are older folks who want to slow down and enjoy the ride, anyway. But enough are...jerks...that it tends to make things unsafe.

This time of year near me, you also get more people who don't tend to ride trails often. #Chicago has only a few weeks in Spring and a few weeks in Autumn (about now) where the weather is encouraging enough for everyone to come outside.

Near me, the experienced #cyclists tend to yell things like "Passing on you left!" when coming up behind each other and behind pedestrians. But with the proliferation of inexperienced #bicyclists due to #ebikes, and with their tendency to go so darn fast, I've been getting a lot more surprises from behind me.

It's especially dangerous for pedestrians with a #dog on a leash, some of whom have been (correctly, for roads) trained to stay to their human's LEFT on walks, or who were never trained to stay on one side of their human in the first place. With slower #bikes and fair warning yelled out, that didn't tend to be a problem before.

Squirrels can suddenly inspire attempts at chasing them, even by dogs on a leash, on either side of the trail. #Dogs do unexpected things.

PLEASE yell out "Passing!" folks (or ring that bell). Don't just zip up from behind.

In America, pedestrians and #bicyclists both tend to (or at least should) keep to the right on the #BikePath, just like when they drive cars on the road.

I think it's confusing for some pedestrians, because they are supposed to be on the left on actual streets. (On roads with traffic and no cement sidewalks, pedestrians are supposed to walk against traffic on the side of the road, but there again... they don't always do that, either.)

With (faster) #ebikes becoming popular and folks riding them on #BikeTrails (often against trail rules and invariably far faster than anyone else on the trail is going), it feels like potential collisions & near-misses are getting to be more common.

(I ride on the #BikePaths in the far Chicago suburbs. Most of these were initially converted from old suburban railcar track lines. Much of it is long stretches with trees along both sides of the paths, or along the #FoxRiver.)
